STRATA: JEFF JUHLIN

Hemmings Gallery

Juhlin has spent decades studying western landscapes, specifically the Great Basin and the high arid desert of the Kaiparowits Plateau in Southern Utah. His mixed media works consist of layers of paper, ink, paint and wax. "Although I don’t consider myself a landscape painter, I seek to reflect a sense of stillness, vast space and the visual history of time evident in the western landscape. My paintings allude to the raw typography and the amazing colors and light from where I live. In this environment, time often reveals itself in the form of rock strata that is both built up and worn away by the elements in a continuous process. Similarly in my work, I reveal layers of translucent strata composed of pigmented & cold wax, oil paint, paper and other media that are built up and worn away in the storied layers of the creative process." Please join us for Gallery Walk night on Friday, 2/16, from 5:00-7:30PM to celebrate the show.

Gallery walk with artist SARAH BIRD

Hemmings Gallery

Join us for Gallery walk night on December 29th from 5:00-7:30 pm. Meet artist Sarah Bird whose solo exhibition “Tiny Fruits” is currently on display at the gallery. Sarah Bird is an Idaho- and Oregon-based realist oil painter. She draws on nineteenth-century techniques and seventeenth-century imaginative Flemish perspectives to weave still life and landscape into intimate tabletop worlds that sometimes tip into the surreal. In her arrangements, both individually and taken together, one can also see the passing of the seasons and a loose calendar of a year, of a life, emerges. These pieces are the “tiny fruits” of seasonal pleasures and of painting. Bird paints only with a very small, size zero round brush which makes the process similar to egg tempura painting or needlework: the whole surface is carefully, heavily touched. FRANCES B. ASHFORTH

Hemmings Gallery

'LAY OF THE LAND' An exhibition by FRANCES B. ASHFORTH at Hemmings Gallery on 340 Walnut Avenue, Ketchum Come meet the artist and celebrate the OPENING NIGHT on FRIDAY 9/1 from 5:00-7:30pm! "Land, water, mountains and deserts are what inspire Frances B. Ashforth. Her passion for fly fishing and time spent in remote places has allowed her to experience sparsely populated and wild lands across the United States. In her latest show 'Lay of the Land' at Hemmings Gallery, Ashforth’s paintings, drawings and waterbase monotypes reflect the geography and geology of intersecting habitats that she has visited and studied. She often orients her compositions along a strong horizon line, exploring its relationships within land, water and sky. Ashforth states, “I am acutely aware of the tension and balance within that line. Weather patterns and time of day temper this balance and translate to composition.” She manipulates light, perspective and contrasts within the elements of the studied habitats. Her work can appear deceptively simple and spare, yet by focusing on the details and editing the composition, Ashforth’s work evokes memory and knowledge that can only evolve from the focused study of a particular landscape."
