Government & Taxes

Sun Valley, Ketchum, Hailey, Bellevue, and Carey are the 5 incorporated cities in Blaine County. All are governed by an elected mayor and a city council. In addition, the unincorporated county is governed by a three-member Board of Commissioners.
Both Ketchum and Sun Valley are authorized by the state to levy a local option tax. In Ketchum, the tax rate is 3% on lodging and liquor by the glass, and 2% on other retail sales. In Sun Valley, the tax rate on lodging and retail sales is 4%. Various exemptions apply to these taxes (e.g., groceries & medical in both jurisdictions, in Sun Valley building materials and lift tickets were exempted in January 1999).

Recycling and Waste Removal

Blaine County recycles newspaper & printer paper, plastics 1-5, and aluminum/tin curbside. We have several drop off locations for glass and cardboard, and our main Recycle Center accepts items such as batteries, household hazardous waste, and electronics. We also participate in Hilex Poly’s plastic bag recycle program.

  • Schools & Education
    • The Blaine County School District serves the cities of Hailey, Ketchum, Sun Valley, Bellevue, Carey, and the surrounding areas. Blaine County is home to about 22,000 people. The School District includes six elementary schools, one middle school, one high school, an alternative high school, and a K-12 school.
      Also, a branch of the College of Southern Idaho is located in Hailey. Private schools include The Community School and Sage School.
