Gideon Freudmann is a groundbreaking musician who has helped to redefine the cello. He is classically trained and uses those skills to expand the stylistic and tonal range of the instrument. Gideon’s original scores for silent films incorporate classical, jazz, folk and world music. Working with a cello and an array of pedal effects, he creates elaborate sound textures, catchy melodies and exciting rhythms that beautifully enhance and energize the imagery of silent films.

IDAHO in the Movies – October

The Hailey Public Library is launching IDAHO in the Movies, a quirky, new monthly series of free screenings on the 3rd Thursday of each month. The series kicks off on Thursday, October 17, at 6:00 PM at Town Center West, 116 S River, with a delightful 2004 cult classic rated PG. Filmed in Preston, Idaho, the town’s most curious resident lives with his grandma and 32-year-old brother (who cruises chat rooms for ladies) and works to help his best friend snatch the Student Body President title from a mean teen. Morgan James

An Idaho Native, Morgan James is a Juilliard-trained soul singer, songwriter, actress, and recording artist based in New York City. Her debut began on Broadway in The Addams Family, Wonderland, Godspell and Motown: The Musical, and as a guest at Kristin Chenoweth’s For the Girls. Noteworthy albums include 2023’s Nobody’s Fool and Reckless Abandon, which prompted The Huffington Post to call James the “Brightest Breakout Artist of the Year.” Morgan’s newest album, Morgan James, Live at Antone’s, was recently released this August.

LECTURE: An Evening with David Sedaris

David Sedaris is one of America’s pre-eminent humor writers. He is a master of satire and one of today’s most observant writers. Beloved for his personal essays and short stories, David Sedaris is the author of the New York Times bestsellers Barrel Fever, Holidays on Ice, Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, When You Are Engulfed in Flames, Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls, and Calypso. Sedaris has been nominated for five Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album. There are over 16 million copies of his books in print, and they have been translated into 32 languages. He has been awarded the Terry Southern Prize for Humor, Thurber Prize for American Humor, Jonathan Swift International Literature Prize for Satire and Humor, Time 2001 Humorist of the Year Award, as well as the Medal for Spoken Language from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In March 2019 he was elected as a member into the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 2020 the New York Public Library voted Me Talk Pretty One Day one of the 125 most important books of the last 125 years.

OPEN STUDIO: Printmaking

Try your hand at printmaking using a press. Cut a 4×6 linoleum block and do a simple one-color print. Work from images provided in the Open Studio, or bring in your own images to work from. Caty Kendall will be assisting everyone with using the press and learning some of the basics of the printmaking process. All printmaking materials provided at the Open Studio. Ages 16+; all levels, beginners welcome This open studio takes place from 6–8:30pm. About the Instructor Caty Kendall has an MFA from Pratt Institute and has been teaching all ges for more than twenty years. Her work has been presented in multiple galleries on the East Coast and is in the permanent printmaking collections of the New York Public Library and the University of Georgia.

In this introductory three-hour leather workshop, participants will learn to make their own hand-cut leather tassels. Participants will make 2-3 tassels each to keep or share.
