TEEN WORKSHOP: Matisse Today

Learn how Henri Matisse used paper collages and color to make compositions with nonrepresentational and organic forms, and create your own Matisse-inspired artwork. Add brush strokes and squeeze tubes of paint onto paper, making color gradations. On the back of the paper, draw and cut out forms and shapes to make collages of your own interpretation. This class will be suitable for all ages. Age & Ability: 12–18; no experience necessary; beginners welcome!

EVENING EXHIBITION TOUR: Tina Barney: Homecoming

Join SVMoA’s curators for a tour of the exhibitions Tina Barney: Homecoming and Rob Davis: Records. Refreshments will be served. Tina Barney: Homecoming features photographs Barney made between 1976 and 1980, when the internationally renowned artist was living in Ketchum, Idaho, and taking photography classes at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts (now Sun Valley Museum of Art). Made with a Pentax 35mm camera, the images document the daily life and activities of the people closest to Barney. They are representative of a key stage in her trajectory as an artist, before she began working with a large format camera to make carefully composed and directed photographs. In contrast, the images in this exhibition, which were made in Sun Valley, Rhode Island, and New York, are more spontaneous. But like her later photographs, these early works illuminate the subtle interactions and psychological tensions that occur among family and friends even in moments of leisure – at weddings and on squash courts, at the beach, waterpark, or a ski race. ART CLUB: A Conversation with Artist Rob Davis

Join SVMoA for Art Club—a new program for those who want to learn more about contemporary art. Join SVMoA for a conversation with painter Rob Davis, and a walkthrough of his SVMoA exhibition Records. Davis’s realist images depict empty kitchen tables, living rooms, and porches; piles of records and plants in macrame holders. While his paintings emerge from his own lived experience, their investigation of the domestic possesses universal resonance for all viewers, particularly those familiar with the 1970s. Refreshments will be served.

WORKSHOP: Handmade Artist Books WITH ANGELA BATCHELOR

Over the course of two days, participants will explore paper decoration and mixed media to create two handmade artist books. Day One: Create a “Letter Book” that serves as a time capsule to reflect on future goals. Day Two: Create a “Map Book” that looks at past personal experiences. Clear instructions, handouts and demonstrations will give participants the skills and tools to make unique artists books on their own. Students will leave with two unique finished projects. THIS 2-DAY WORKSHOP TAKES PLACE SAT & SUN, JULY 27 & 28, FROM 10AM–2PM DAILY AT THE HAILEY CLASSROOM. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Angela Batchelor comes from an academic background with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in fine arts. She is currently an Associate Professor of Art at the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls and teaches courses in Painting, Art History, Book Arts, Printmaking and Calligraphy. She maintains an active studio practice with work that meanders between expressive mark-making and mixed media pieces, including prints, calligraphy pieces and artist books that focus on religious, social, and scientific themes. $160 member, $200 nonmembers

Sun Valley Museum of Art (SVMoA) is proud to announce a blockbuster concert for summer: Lake Street Dive’s “Good Together Tour” will come to Ketchum’s River Run Lodge on Tuesday, July 30, at 7 p.m. With tens of millions of streams, an acclaimed discography including seven celebrated studio LPs, two EPs, a slew of much-loved singles, and an enduring worldwide fanbase to their credit, Lake Street Dive has become a dynamic and exhilarating force in popular music. The band features vocalist Rachael Price, bassist/background vocalist Bridget Kearney, drummer/background vocalist Mike Calabrese, keyboardist/vocalist Akie Bermiss and guitarist/background vocalist James Cornelison. Sun Valley Museum of Art has been bringing together Wood River Valley music fans at summer concerts since the 1970s, with over 100,000 attendees. SVMoA’s concerts have been held at Trail Creek (Buddy Guy, Blues Traveler); the Sun Valley Pavilion (the Avett Brothers, Lord Huron and Bonnie Raitt); and River Run Lodge (Lyle Lovett, Chris Isaak, Jackson Browne, James Taylor & Carole King, Wilco and Michael Franti). Over the past 40 years, the Museum has been proud to share this country’s greatest performers with the community and will continue the tradition this summer.

Each 3-hour class will start with a slide show of watercolors by favorite artists and end with a group critique. Treasure the souvenirs! All materials and supplies will be provided. Age & ability: 17+, beginners welcome! THIS 8-SESSION WORKSHOP WILL TAKE PLACE MON–THU, AUG 5–8 AND AUG 12–15, FROM 10AM–1PM DAILY. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Jim Caldwell graduated from Williams College in 1964 as an Art Major and spent the next year in Paris studying printing and etching at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. In 1969, he received his Master of Architecture Degree from the Yale School of Architecture. Jim has had over 45 one-man shows, and his paintings are represented in more than 450 collections worldwide. Though he has spent most of his life in the San Francisco Bay Area, Jim’s Sun Valley connections go back to the 1950s. This will be the fourth class he has taught in Sun Valley.

ARTIST TALK: Maria De Los Angeles

Join SVMoA for an Artist Talk with visiting artist Maria De Los Angeles, who is leading bilingual teen and community workshops in preparation for her participation in an exhibition at SVMoA next year. Assistant Director in Painting and Printmaking at Yale University, De Los Angeles is a nationally known, Mexican-born, American artist who addresses ideas of migration, belonging, and identity through her drawing, painting, printmaking, and wearable sculptures.
