The Idaho Dark Sky Alliance (IDSA) invites the community to unplug, look up, and discover the wonders of the night sky. IDSA’s fourth annual Perseid-Palooza will offer two nights of meteor watching and stargazing on August 11 and 12.

The first night will be at the new Sawtooth Observatory in Stanley on Tuesday, August 11. The second night will be at the Sawtooth Botanical Garden in Ketchum on Wednesday, August 12. Both events will begin at 8:30 pm.

Local astronomers and night sky enthusiasts will lead participants on a cosmic tour including the Perseid meteor shower, deep sky objects, and summer constellations. The event will include meteor watching and telescope observing, plus kids’ astro-activities. IDSA will also offer information about their efforts to reduce light pollution and preserve our breathtaking views of the night sky.

The peak nights for the Perseids in 2026 are August 11-13. A new moon on August 12 will provide a dark sky, making it easier to see even faint meteors. The best time to spot meteors is from midnight to dawn. To enhance your viewing experience, you might want to bring a comfy chair or blanket to stretch out on. And don’t forget to grab a coat to stay warm.

Perseid-Palooza 2026 is co-sponsored by the Idaho Dark Sky Alliance, the Sawtooth Botanical Garden, and Boise State University. The Sawtooth Observatory is located in Stanley Pioneer Park on Airport Road in Stanley. The Garden is located at 11 Gimlet Road, off of Hwy 75 south of Ketchum.
