Friesen+Lantz Fine Art presents a bold new body of work from encaustic artist Suzanne Hazlett. Encaustic painting is a technique dating back to the Greeks, blending fire with wax and pigment to fuse the material with a rigid surface. “I am a rock climber and a stargazer seeking a balance between celestial inspiration and earthly reality,” says Hazlett. “Incorporated in this collection are influences from stone, land formations, skyscapes, and atmosphere, as well as stars and nebulae.”"This is a rare body of work in an artist’s career—one that unequivocally marks a dramatic expansion in their craft and the beginning of an exciting chapter," Friesen+Lantz Owner/Director Yanna Lantz says. "Hazlett is pushing the boundaries of encaustic in her inventive forms, incredible depth and combinations of colors that transport viewers to another realm." Mary Mott observes. Reflects. Questions. She writes about things we don’t usually talk about or consider. But she does. She peels away the layers revealing a self that is vulnerable. Unsure. But willing to be the brunt of any issue she stumbles into. And there are many. What does it feel like to be female now? After 60? What will our children remember of us? Why living in the middle can get us stuck. What an empty house tells us. Grief. Mary Mott has performed four one-woman shows covering various aspects of her life. Her shows, writings and podcasts can be found on her website: marymottwrites.com. She started writing in college and quickly moved into the advertising business in New York and San Francisco for over twenty-five years. After moving to the Wood River Valley she wrote a column for the local paper originally called “Mindsoup,” and co-hosted a weekly radio show. This show, “As I see it”, will be a concoction of observations, musings, stories and readings. Please join us. Bring a friend. Run time is one hour. The performance will be livestreamed and recorded.

The National Library of Israel has the honor of holding the third largest collection in the world of Franz Kafka's original manuscripts, letters, and drawings; it represents a significant perspective of Kafka's legacy. While Kafka did not foresee the sacred value of his work, his friend Max Brod, who was part of Kafka's literary circle, did and he preserved Kafka's material even when instructed not to do so. Dr. Stefan Litt, Humanities Curator of the National Library of Israel, will not only share highlights of the Kafka archives, but will tell the story behind the Kafka collection and how it ultimately came to the National Library of Israel. Stefan Litt received his PhD in Pre-Modern History from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He has researched and taught at the universities of Erfurt, Duesseldorf, Graz and Bar-Ilan in Israel, and has published on the history of early modern European Jewry and on Jewish archives and book culture. He was awarded the Rosl and Paul Arnsberg Prize for his research. Since 2010, he has worked as an archivist at the National Library of Israel, responsible for the foreign language holdings. Hailey Public Library will buzz into spring with a free talk about ‘The Amazing World of Native Bees’ with educator and forester Linda Ries on Thursday, March 23, 5:30-7:00 PM at Town Center West. The talk is co-sponsored with the Wood River Chapter of the Idaho Native Plant Society. Native bees are a primary pollinator for agricultural crops. However, these fascinating creatures are in decline all over the United States as a result of loss of habitat, toxins and disease. The good news is that there’s much we can do in our own backyards to help them out. But first we need to learn more about the unique natural history and lifestyle of the species who live here.

In "I Know Who You Are: How An Amateur DNA Sleuth Unmasked The Golden State Killer And Changed Crime Fighting Forever," Barbara Rae-Venter reveals how she went from researching her family history as a retiree to hunting for a notorious serial killer—and how she became the nation’s leading authority on investigative genetic genealogy, the most dazzling new crime-fighting weapon to appear in decades. Rae-Venter leads readers on a vivid journey through the many cases she tackled, often starting with little more than a DNA sample. From the first criminal case she ever solved to the search for the Golden State Killer, Rae-Venter shares haunting, often thrilling accounts of how she helped solve some of America’s most chilling cold cases in the span of just three years. "I Know Who You Are" captures both the exhilaration of the moment of discovery and the sheer depth of emotion that lingers around cold cases, informing Rae-Venter’s careful approach to her work. The ‘greatest party on snow’ will return yet again in its 24th iteration for 2023! Welcome to the Janss Pro-Am Classic Celebrating our 24th Janss Pro-Am this year is due to the stalwart support of participants, partners, pros, sponsors and volunteers since 1998. Thanks to the efforts of many, we are still honoring the memory of Bill Janss and instilling his legacy and love for the sport of skiing into the lives of young people through our world-class coaching, facilities and, of course, the wonderful mountains and valley we inhabit. www.svsef.org/events/24th-annual-janss-pro-am-classic/ The Janss Pro-Am Classic is held in memory of Mr. Bill Janss. A true renaissance man, Janss embodied the best qualities of the American spirit. He was dynamic, intelligent, fearless and kind, and had the vision and strength of character to boldly take Sun Valley Resort to the next level after purchasing it in 1964. Named to the 1940 Olympic Alpine Team, Janss remained a lifetime enthusiast and supporter of skiing and ski racing until his death in 1996. Because of Bill – his attributes, ethos and commitment to our community – the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation is proud to host the Janss Pro-Am Classic in his honor.

Ulu’s Story: On the slopes of the Hualalai volcano, the morning sun and vibrant bird songs illuminate the mountain, and as afternoon approaches, clouds settle in and bring evening rain – ideal conditions for the coffee tree. Over 40 years ago, founder Phil Hodson’s mother Carol settled on five acres of pasture and mango groves, and soon planted macadamia nut trees on hillside of the Hualalai volcano. Years later, Phil noticed a new tree growing on the land a coffee tree seeded by natural fauna, it was this moment that the idea of ulu was born. Learning from neighbors how ...
An intimate journey into the sketchbook world and how drawing can offer a moment of stillness and peace within an often chaotic world. This weekly drop-in workshop offers a welcoming and supportive space for both beginners and seasoned sketchers to draw together. Focus will be on nature journaling, but any type of drawing is welcome. Prompts will be offered as well as guidance. Each session we will jump down a “rabbit hole” and study in depth one plant or landscape element or learn about different brushes, paints, papers, and other art supplies. Leslie will also show nature journals kept by different artists for inspiration. For supplies bring a current sketchbook, if you are working in one, travel-size water color set and brush, or just a pencil or pen and paper. Leslie Rego has drawn in journals for years. She carries sketchbooks and paints with her while enjoying the national forest and will take time to draw and paint landscapes and flowers on her many hikes. Leslie wrote the "Sketchbook Hiking" article in The Weekly Sun for many years. She has artwork in private collections, The Sun Valley Lodge and around the world.
