Clinics will run Tuesday through Saturday at the Sun Valley Resort from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm throughout the summer. Equipment will be provided, but feel free to bring your own. Join master knitter and Sun Valley Needle Arts owner Patricia Lirk on July 18 for a friendly Knitting Circle designed for all abilities. Hosted by Hailey Public Library, the free activity is offered from 5:30-7:00 PM on the third Tuesday of each month in the main library building at 7 W Croy. Participants should bring their own yarn and needles. Pre-registration is encouraged by emailing kristin.fletcher@haileypubliclibrary.org but not required.

Join the Sun Valley Museum of Art for a conversation with author Judith Freeman, artist and photographer Anthony Hernandez and Jack Lane, the former director of the Dallas Museum of Art and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Dividing their time between Idaho’s Camas Prairie and Los Angeles, Freeman and Hernandez will talk with Lane about the move between rural and urban and its effect on their practices, the art they live with, and the works by Hernandez that Lane has collected over the years.

Dark Sky Binocular Observation

Join Dr. Lindsay DeMarchi, a 2023 Astronomer in Residence with the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve STEM Network, for an evening of binocular stargazing above the rooftops of Ketchum . This is a NASA funded program from Boise State University, which works closely with The Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve to bring science to classrooms, libraries, and more. Pre-registration required. Limited to 15 attendees. Attendees should plan to bring their own binoculars, and Dr. DeMarchi will guide us through viewing the night sky with this accessible tool. NOTE: Attending this program does require walking up three flights of stairs to access the rooftop patio above the Library's new Wood River Museum of History and Culture, across the street from the Library at the corner of 4th Street and Walnut Avenue. A specific meeting point will be given to registered attendees. Dr. Lindsay DeMarchi is an interdisciplinary space environmentalist and stellar mortician, proudly engaging the public on all matters dark and wondrous. She is the Astronomer in Residence at the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve and author of numerous scientific articles to bring awareness to outer-space sustainability and light pollution. Children’s Summer Meals: Volunteer to prepare!

The Hunger Coalition and The Community Library provide free meals, books and enrichment activities to children throughout the Wood River Valley during summer. Join us in meal preparation; we're serving anywhere from 100 to 200 meals a day! We chef it up Mondays and Wednesday mornings, through August 24. Visit our website to reserve your volunteer time today! Time slots are 8:30am - 11am and 10am to 12:30pm, on both Mondays and Wednesdays.

Mountain Humane Hikin’ Buddies

At Hikin’ Buddies, you can take a shelter dog for a hike or hang out and socialize some of the smaller dogs. It is a great opportunity to meet some of Mountain Humane’s adoptable dogs as well as to learn more about the organization. All are welcome to join in throughout the summer, weather permitting. Meet at Adam’s Gulch trailhead, north of Ketchum, from 9:30am - 1:00pm on Wednesdays. No appointment is necessary; just bring your family and friends to have a good time with some dogs that would love to meet you!

Community Speaker Series: “Solito” with Javier Zamora

In 1999, a nine-year-old boy left his tiny village in El Salvador to join his parents who had emigrated to America some years before. His astonishing nine-week, 3,000-mile journey, without friends or family, is the heart of JAVIER ZAMORA’s riveting memoir.  Zamora writes in the pitch-perfect voice of that child as he makes his perilous way, on foot and by boat and bus and truck, recalling moments of true terror and of unexpected tenderness. In conversation with executive director of The Community Library JENNY EMERY DAVIDSON, Zamora will speak about the book, about how he was finally able to write it, about trauma and healing and hope, and about becoming the celebrated poet and writer that he is. Presented in partnership with the Sun Valley Writers’ Conference, the Community Speaker Series welcomes speakers from the annual conference to The Community Library for a free community event.
