Sun Valley Early Literacy Learning Summit
The Community LibraryJune 12-14, 2024, The Community Library invites Kindergarten through Grade 3 educators – who open the world of words to children – from around southern Idaho to come to Ketchum/Sun Valley for three days of lively conversation and learning with preeminent literacy scholars and colleagues. We’ll dig into reading research and discuss: how reading happens in the brain, the components of structured literacy, the impact of phonemic awareness on literacy, the principles of spelling, informed teaching strategies for multilingual language learners, informed teaching strategies for students with dyslexia, social-emotional learning, and more. There is no cost for the Early Literacy Summit. An honorarium of $200 will be provided to teachers based in Blaine County, and $500 will be provided to instructors traveling from outside of Blaine County, to help cover travel and associated expenses. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks will be provided each day. Continuing education credit will be provided through Northwest Nazarene University. Registration is limited to approximately 36 instructors. Wildflower Walks
Various Locations2024 is SBG’s 20th year Wildflower Walks! Join us walking slowly on nearby moderate to easy trails as we appreciate the blooming native plants of our area. Walks will be led by botanists, naturalists, birders, and wildflower enthusiasts. Meet at Sawtooth Botanical Garden (11 Gimlet Road, 4 miles south of Ketchum), and follow each other or carpool to the trailhead. Children under 14 are welcome with an adult. No dogs please! Bring clothing for possible weather, hiking shoes (no flip fops or dress shoes), sun protection, plenty of water, reusable water bottle and a lunch. A camera, field guide, binoculars and notebook may help with identifying and remembering plants. Boxcar Bend Work Party
Boxcar Bend PreserveLet's get this party started! Boxcar Bend needs some love and we’re teaming up with Trout Unlimited for the first work party of the summer. Now all we need is YOU! We invite you, your friends and family to help us spruce up Boxcar Bend Preserve, off Highway 75, north of the East Fork light. Tasks include pulling weeds, spreading wood chips on the trail, and picking up trash. Garbage bags will be provided, but please bring gloves and a water bottle. No experience is necessary, and no sign-up is required. Light snacks will be available for participants. Come make a difference and enjoy a morning outdoors! (And maybe jump in the river afterwards…)
