The Hailey Public Library will host Cultura, a 4-part series celebrating the rich cultural traditions of our Hispanic neighbors. An Hispanic Heritage Month offering, Cultura invites community leaders to share personal stories, images, and conversation about their home countries. On Thursday, September 14, from 5:30-7:00 PM, Salvadoran and community advocate Herbert Romero and dual immersion teacher Edith Lopez Millard will discuss Javier Zamora’s remarkable memoir Solito which describes his illegal migration as a 9-year-old boy from El Salvador to the US to join his parents. Learn how to create stunning images under some of the darkest skies in the lower 48 states with astrophotographer Nate Liles! This class will cover pre-trip planning, camera settings and ideal equipment, composition, panorama creation, and post-processing techniques. Participants will meet at the Sun Valley Museum of Art's Hailey Classroom on Fri, Sep 15 at 4:30pm to make a pre-trip plan and review camera basics. Carpools will depart for the shooting location at Craters of the Moon by 6pm. Students will photograph the sunset (7:50pm), discuss camera settings and composition, and shoot a bit during blue hour (twilight) before astronomical twilight (fully dark sky). Once the sky fully darkens (9pm), participants will practice creating long-exposure night sky compositions before heading back to Hailey around 10:30pm. If the sky is cloudy at the chosen site, arrangements will be made to find an alternate site with clear skies. On Saturday, students will discuss post-processing techniques, including light noise reduction, panorama stitching, lens corrections, and image retouching. Age and ability: 17+ years old and basic knowledge of how to operate your camera in manual mode; advanced photography skills not required.

To celebrate Trailing of the Sheep Festival, the Hailey Public Library is delighted to offer “Learn to Knit” a 5-part class taught by master knitter and Sun Valley Needle Arts owner Patricia Lirk. The free series will focus on the basics and conclude with a personal project. Classes will be held at the Library located at 7 West Croy on Tuesdays from 5:30-7:00 PM, starting October 3. Participants will provide their own yarn and needles. The class is free but space is limited so participants should email kristin.fletcher@haileypubliclibrary.org or call 208-788-2036 to register for the series.

Go Figure! Elevate your Tuesday evening and join SVMoA for a creative studio session that will explore the human figure in variations of lighting, pose, and setting. SVMoA provides a clothed or unclothed model, refreshments, and an open, self-guided studio setting for participants of all abilities. Open to anyone interested in working from the model, regardless of experience level. Familiarity with basic drawing fundamentals recommended. $25 adults / $15 for students Bring your own supplies; drawing boards will be provided. Age & ability: 16+, all skill levels welcome!

The Hailey Public Library’s Cultura series concludes with a visit to Cali, the second largest city in Colombia, known as the “Rumba Capital” of the world. Los Angeles violinista and educator Mauricio Molino will share personal stories, images, and conversation about his home country, and play the violin. The presentation will be held Sunday, October 8, 2;00-4:00 PM at Town Center West.
