TEEN WORKSHOP: Matisse Today
SVMoA Hailey ClassroomLearn how Henri Matisse used paper collages and color to make compositions with nonrepresentational and organic forms, and create your own Matisse-inspired artwork. Add brush strokes and squeeze tubes of paint onto paper, making color gradations. On the back of the paper, draw and cut out forms and shapes to make collages of your own interpretation. This class will be suitable for all ages. Age & Ability: 12–18; no experience necessary; beginners welcome!

Preserving Family Recipes with Cynthia Nims
The Community LibraryPreserving cherished recipes from family and friends is a meaningful way to keep traditions alive and to ensure associated memories remain vibrant. Join Seattle-based author Cynthia Nims for a writing workshop focused on the value of these most beloved recipes. Cynthia has been writing recipes for cookbooks and magazines for many years. Inspiration for those recipes comes from countless sources, among them are recipes that had a beginning in her mom’s kitchen. She’ll talk about the treasure that she considers her mother’s falling-apart recipe folder to be. And she’ll share examples of how recipes that may seem a bit dated can find a place in your kitchen today. Bring along a cherished family recipe or two, if you like. There will be time for an informal exercise to help capture the stories of these recipes. In partnership with the Sun Valley Culinary Institute. Register at www.comlib.org to attend.

WORKSHOP: Handmade Artist Books WITH ANGELA BATCHELOR
SVMoA Hailey ClassroomOver the course of two days, participants will explore paper decoration and mixed media to create two handmade artist books. Day One: Create a “Letter Book” that serves as a time capsule to reflect on future goals. Day Two: Create a “Map Book” that looks at past personal experiences. Clear instructions, handouts and demonstrations will give participants the skills and tools to make unique artists books on their own. Students will leave with two unique finished projects. THIS 2-DAY WORKSHOP TAKES PLACE SAT & SUN, JULY 27 & 28, FROM 10AM–2PM DAILY AT THE HAILEY CLASSROOM. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Angela Batchelor comes from an academic background with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in fine arts. She is currently an Associate Professor of Art at the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls and teaches courses in Painting, Art History, Book Arts, Printmaking and Calligraphy. She maintains an active studio practice with work that meanders between expressive mark-making and mixed media pieces, including prints, calligraphy pieces and artist books that focus on religious, social, and scientific themes. $160 member, $200 nonmembers

Sun Valley Museum of ArtAwaken your creativity. In this 8-day intensive, learn to draw and paint: first in ink, then in watercolor. Capture travel scenes in a pocket sketchbook with Prismacolor and ink, draw and paint from still life setups as well as from projected images. Each 3-hour class will start with a slide show of watercolors by favorite artists and end with a group critique. Treasure the souvenirs! All materials and supplies will be provided. Age & ability: 17+, beginners welcome! THIS 8-SESSION WORKSHOP WILL TAKE PLACE MON–THU, AUG 5–8 AND AUG 12–15, FROM 10AM–1PM DAILY. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Jim Caldwell graduated from Williams College in 1964 as an Art Major and spent the next year in Paris studying printing and etching at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. In 1969, he received his Master of Architecture Degree from the Yale School of Architecture. Jim has had over 45 one-man shows, and his paintings are represented in more than 450 collections worldwide. Though he has spent most of his life in the San Francisco Bay Area, Jim’s Sun Valley connections go back to the 1950s. This will be the fourth class he has taught in Sun Valley.

Participants will make fabric patches that will become part of a sculpture the artist is creating for an exhibition at SVMoA in the summer of 2025.
