TEEN WORKSHOP: Matisse Today

Learn how Henri Matisse used paper collages and color to make compositions with nonrepresentational and organic forms, and create your own Matisse-inspired artwork. Add brush strokes and squeeze tubes of paint onto paper, making color gradations. On the back of the paper, draw and cut out forms and shapes to make collages of your own interpretation. This class will be suitable for all ages. Age & Ability: 12–18; no experience necessary; beginners welcome!

WORKSHOP: Handmade Artist Books WITH ANGELA BATCHELOR

Over the course of two days, participants will explore paper decoration and mixed media to create two handmade artist books. Day One: Create a “Letter Book” that serves as a time capsule to reflect on future goals. Day Two: Create a “Map Book” that looks at past personal experiences. Clear instructions, handouts and demonstrations will give participants the skills and tools to make unique artists books on their own. Students will leave with two unique finished projects. THIS 2-DAY WORKSHOP TAKES PLACE SAT & SUN, JULY 27 & 28, FROM 10AM–2PM DAILY AT THE HAILEY CLASSROOM. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Angela Batchelor comes from an academic background with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in fine arts. She is currently an Associate Professor of Art at the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls and teaches courses in Painting, Art History, Book Arts, Printmaking and Calligraphy. She maintains an active studio practice with work that meanders between expressive mark-making and mixed media pieces, including prints, calligraphy pieces and artist books that focus on religious, social, and scientific themes. $160 member, $200 nonmembers

Delve into the alternative photography process of cyanotypes and learn about their historical role in botanical illustrations. Select from an array of natural materials to compose your own work of art. Expose the cyanotypes to the sun and bring them indoors to witness the transformation as your compositions come to life. Each participant will leave with knowledge of the technical aspects of cyanotype creation and their own unique and captivating piece of botanical art. Students are encouraged to bring their own natural objects for making cyanotypes. This workshop will work mostly with pre-coated cyanotype paper. Age & Ability: 12–18; all levels; beginners welcome! THIS WORKSHOP TAKES PLACE FROM 10AM–NOON AT SVMOA'S HAILEY CLASSROOM. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Ashley Larson is an interdisciplinary artist based in Boise, Idaho. WORKSHOP: Environmental Portrait Photography WITH OLIVER GUY

Explore the intersection of landscape photography with portraiture. Learn about camera settings, making lens choices and using natural light to compose powerful landscape photographs and environmental portraits. The two-day workshop will consist of classroom instruction and a location shoot allowing participants the opportunity to practice their photography skills, learn the basics of editing, and engage in the post-production process. Students will need: Camera (ideally DSLR or Mirrorless with wide angle lens and low aperture) A wide-angle lens and a telephoto lens (70-200mm) recommended, if available Tripod Remote Timer Laptop for editing (Digital editing software, not required) Age & ability: 17+, basic knowledge of how to operate your camera in manual mode; advanced photography skills not required.
