Marcus King faces heartache, addiction, and mental health head-on in his music. Pain quakes below the vibrato of his voice, and his delivery weighs heavy with booze-drenched regrets and mistakes in lonely hotels. The GRAMMY® nominated fourth generation musician from Greenville, SC, started playing guitar at 8-years-old following in the footsteps of his guitarist Father and Grandpa. Logging thousands of miles on the road as “The Marcus King Band,” he established himself with unparalleled performance prowess. During 2020, he linked up with Dan Auerbach and cut his solo debut El Dorado, garnering a GRAMMY® Award nomination for “Best Americana Album.” Between headlining venues he performed alongside Chris Stapleton, Greta Van Fleet, and Nathaniel Rateliff in addition to gracing the bills of Stagecoach and more. King has launched various mental health initiatives, including a guitar auction collaboration with MusiCares. Now, his 2024 album Mood Swings feels like the moment of baptism when water washes away a life’s worth of sins and degradation and all that’s left is a revived, yet still real-as-hell primal scream. It’s as if King strained raw soul straight from his gut up through that broken heart and on to the record under the watchful eye of Rick …
Film screening: FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN: The Story of the 10th Mountain Division
Fire on the Mountain celebrates the United States’ indomitable snowmen, the men of the 10th Mountain Division, America’s only mountain and winter warfare troops. This award-winning film is an emotional portrait of the mountain warriors’ creation, grueling training, daring World War II exploits, then focuses on their next 50 years. United by their love of the mountains, the 10th attracted championship skiers & mountaineers. Their first battle was the spectacular night climb of Italy’s Apennine Riva Ridge where they surprised the Germans on top. That led to a push that ended World War II a week earlier in Italy than the rest of Europe. After the war, they pioneered the United States’ infant ski industry and became the backbone of its outdoor education and conservation movements. Veterans of the 10th Mountain Division include many familiar names and faces from Sun Valley in the 1930s as well as after the war: Fire on the Mountain comes full circle as it follows members of the 10th Mountain Division on their 1995 re-climb of Riva Ridge. Again, the Germans were waiting on top, but; this time, veterans from the United States, Austria, Germany and Italy, now members of the International Federation of Mountain …
24 Hours with a Local: Higher Ground’s Kate Dobbie
Higher Ground’s Kate Dobbie has been with the organization for sixteen years, starting from when she came on as their four full-time employee in a Volunteer Coordinator Position to serving as Executive Director for twelve years, to her current role as Chief Development Officer. The Florida native originally moved to the Wood River Valley with five friends after college, intending, as so many do, to stay for just one or two years before moving on. But after waiting tables and nannying, she landed a job at Hemingway Elementary that would change her life forever. Working as a paraprofessional for a Kindergartener named Ruby (who, in a full-circle moment, is now working for Higher Ground as well), Kate worked one-on-one with Ruby for a whole year, taking her swimming and doing other activities. She got her first exposure to Higher Ground (then called Sun Valley Adaptive Sports)—a nonprofit that provides therapeutic recreation and education to children and adults with developmental, cognitive, or physical disabilities—when Ruby went on a ski outing. When a job came up at the organization, Kate jumped at the chance, rising through the organization over the years and taking it from an organization with a handful of full-time …
