Stewarding the Sawtooths: The Past, Present and Future of Idaho’s Crown Jewel
The Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA) is the crown jewel of Idaho’s public lands, encompassing 756,000 acres of jagged mountains, alpine lakes, and key salmon spawning grounds. The SNRA exists to preserve and protect the area’s natural, scenic, historic, pastoral and fish and wildlife values and to provide for the enhancement of the area’s recreation values. But what happens when there are not enough staff or budget for the Forest Service to capably manage this expansive and heavily visited area? This presentation will trace the story of the SNRA from its purposeful creation in 1972 through to the challenges the Area faces in the present day due to larger threats to Idaho’s public lands. We will discuss what those challenges are currently and what organizations, programs, and partnerships exist to help steward the SNRA through these turbulent times. The presentation will feature a group of speakers who are intimately familiar with the SNRA: Kathryn Grohusky is the Executive Director of the Sawtooth Society, a nonpartisan organization founded in 1997 by politicians, advocates, and local residents that shared a collective love of the Sawtooth Valley. The Sawtooth Society accomplishes its mission of preserving, protecting, and enhancing the Sawtooth National Recreation Area …

Sun Valley’s Next Generation of Skiers and Boarders
It would be hard for the town of Sun Valley, Idaho, not to be mentioned when talking about professional and Olympic skiers and snowboarders; the town is practically synonymous with greatness. With Bald Mountain as their training ground, ski greats from Picabo Street to Gretchen Fraser back in the day to more recent pros like McKenna Peterson, Wing Tai Barrymore, Lexi DuPont, Banks Gilberti, Colin Collins, Karl Fostvedt, Lucy Sackbauer have added to the legacy of the place. And snowboarders too—did you know there’s never been a U.S. Olympic snowboard team without a member from Sun Valley? Repping the boarders are Olympians Chase Josey, Kaitlyn Farrington, Graham Watanabe and a whole lot of other pros and amazing riders. The time has come for some of those same skiers and boarders to pass the torch to the next generation, which promises to bring it just as hard, race just as fast, jump just as high, and continue to put Sun Valley on the map for winter athletes. The Rafford’s “For me, skiing on Bald Mountain was a privilege that took me years to appreciate.” Toby Rafford Starting out the list of the new generation are brother and sister duo Addison (Addie) and Toby Rafford, both of whom are …
Native American Heritage in the Wood River Valley
Native American Heritage Month’s history started in 1990 when President George H.W. Bush approved a joint resolution for November of that year to be “National American Indian Heritage Month”. Since 1994, the United States has made similar proclamations every year for November. But that’s not where it began. At the beginning of the 20th century, the annual Congress of the American Indian Association meeting approved a plan for a national American Indian Day. Then president Rev. Sherman Coolidge, an Arapahoe, issued a proclamation calling for the second Saturday in May to be American Indian Day. Within that proclamation was the first formal appeal for the United States to recognize natives as citizens. Today, many states recognize Columbus Day as Native American Day, but it is still not recognized as a national legal holiday. Idaho In the state of Idaho, there is a rich history of Native Americans dating back 10,000 years. It is projected that there were over 8,000 people living in the region. 2 distinct groups represented the people, The Great Basin Shoshone and the Bannock tribes of the Shoshone- Bannock, the Shoshone Paiute, and the three tribes from the Plateau region; Coeur d’Alene, Nez Perce, and Kootenai. The …
