Originally a game invented by Surrealist artists in Paris in the 1920s, “Exquisite Corpse” is a collaborative activity designed to stimulate creativity. In this 2-day workshop, examine the history and concept behind the Exquisite Corpse, subjectivity and color theory. Participants will create collages and paintings in a collaborative environment, developing design and color relationship skills, collectively assembling words and images. Participants are encouraged to bring images (drawings, photographs, magazine materials, etc.) to be used in the collaborative projects. WORKSHOP: Collagraph Printing
In this 2-day printmaking workshop, participants will spend the first day making printing plates using various substances and surfaces, such as fabric, bubble wrap, wallpaper, leaves, and more. On day two, ink up and begin printing, either by press or hand. Each time your plate is inked will create a unique monoprint, revealing varying tones, textures, and values of color. SVMoA will provide the necessary materials (included in enrollment cost). Age & ability: 16 and older, beginners welcome! WORKSHOP: Vegetable Garden Sketching
Grab your art supplies and get outside! Painting and drawing nature are ways to develop an informal art practice that connects us to the ecology of the places we inhabit. Sign up for one or both of these 4-hour workshops! In workshops offered on July 5 and 6, students will tap into observation skills and learn basic drawing or painting techniques as we sketch plants and vegetables growing in our backyards. Students should come prepared to carry their art materials for sketching and exploring the blooms in The Hunger Coalition’s Hope Garden, just steps from SVMoA’s Hailey Classroom. Mexico en el Corazon
A free event open to the public, México en el Corazón immerses the audience in the colors, artistry, and music of Mexico with Mariachis, folkloric ballet and more. A showcase of traditional Mexican culture, Mexico en el Corazón features more than 50 performers in traditional costumes as part of a North American tour presented by NAIMA, the North American Institute for Mexican Advancement, sponsored by the government of the state of Jalisco, Mexico. With special thanks to Sun Valley Resort, México en el Corazón will visit Sun Valley for the first time in an extravaganza of Mexican folkloric traditions for a magical evening of culture and community.
“Vermeer: The Greatest Exhibition” Film Screening
The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has put together the largest Vermeer exhibition in history – it will never be repeated. This momentous retrospective is the largest ever devoted exclusively to the “master of light”, with 28 of his 35 known works from countries all over the world. Go Figure! Elevate your Tuesday evening and join SVMoA for a creative studio session that will explore the human figure in variations of lighting, pose, and setting. SVMoA provides a clothed or unclothed model, refreshments, and an open, self-guided studio setting for participants of all abilities. Open to anyone interested in working from the model, regardless of experience level. Familiarity with basic drawing fundamentals is recommended. Mayme Kratz: Shadow & Substance
Mayme Kratz is a mixed media artist whose work suspends found natural objects in resin. An observant investigator of her surroundings, Kratz collects these objects while hiking, camping, and even walking by the railway behind her studio. From native grasses to animal bones, her delicate handling of fragile materials create formal designs that elude to the cosmos. Materiality is both heightened and diminished as the earthen matter transforms into a macro ecosystem of its own.
A Leap of Faith: Rodney Smith Retrospective
Running June 13th-July 25th, 2023, this exhibition celebrates Smith’s 46-year career and the newly published book by the J. Paul Getty Museum. Paul Martieau, Curator of Photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum will be in attendance July 7th during the opening of the exhibition and copies of Rodney Smith: A Leap of Faith are available through the gallery. Rodney Smith (1947-2016) was a renowned New York based photographer who in the tradition of Avedon, Penn and William Klein, transcended fashion photography into fine art. With a career that lasted more than 45 years, Rodney Smith developed a unique style balancing technical mastery and a desire to portray the best of humanity. Long acclaimed for his iconic images that combine portraiture and landscape, Smith created enchanted worlds full of subtle contradictions and surprises. Using only film and light, his un-retouched, dream-like images are matched in quality by the craft and physical beauty of his prints. He was a creator who cared deeply about sharing his vision of the world with humor, grace, and optimism. Smith’s work continues to be shown at museums and galleries worldwide. In 2021 the J.
