Film Screening: Chief Tendoy and In Good Faith

Double feature of two short films.”Chief Tendoy,” (2021) a short historical western film directed by Steve Saxon and Cesar Rodriguez, about an event in the life of the prominent leader of the Northern Shoshone. When many believed that “the only good Indian is a dead Indian,” Chief Tendoy has an encounter with President Ulysses Grant that culminates in a duel of the titans where injustice, theft of land, and violation of treaties are debated. This film will be introduced by Leo Arriwite. The second film, “In Good Faith,” (2018) is a documentary that illuminates the history of the unratified treaty between the U.S. Government and the Lemhi Shoshone people. Shot in Idaho and Montana, ‘In Good Faith’ reveals new discoveries about a Native American tribe, their unratified treaty with the United States and a historical revelation that could change the history of southwestern Montana. Jared Chastain will introduce this film. Location: John A. and Carole O. Moran Lecture Hall at The Community Library. Discussion after the films. What We're Made Of

What We’re Made of: Alternative Education

Despite the relatively small size of the Wood River Valley, educational institutions abound, with sizes and styles for every type of learner. In addition to the eight public schools in the area (Hailey Elementary, Hemingway STEAM School, Wood River Middle School, Wood River High School, Alturas Elementary, Bellevue Elementary, Carey Public School, Silver Creek High School), there are also five schools providing what might be called “alternative education”: Sun Valley Community School, the Sage School, Syringa Mountain School, Pioneer Montessori School, and Trinity School. Read on to learn about each of their unique curriculums, founding, and the benefits of such educational models. Sun Valley Community School The only independent school in the Wood River Valley educating pre-K through 12th grade, the Sun Valley Community School was founded in 1973 and serves roughly 435 students. While small class sizes, excellent teachers, and robust academics contribute to the esteemed reputation of the school, it’s some of Community School’s unique programming, like their Outdoor Program, the Academies, and Boarding Program that make it so unique. The Outdoor Program has been a key component of the school since its founding over 50 years ago and is an integral part of every student’s experience throughout …

Surface

This group exhibition celebrates the various means by which artists achieve texture and movement within their work. Pegan Brooke’s oil paintings both minimalist and monochromatic, mimic the atmospheric qualities of water through the use of metallic pigments and staccato brushstrokes. Abstract painter, Raphaëlle Goethals is known for her signature layered encaustic and sophisticated minimalism, fusing to create non-representational masterpieces. Her works are void of any sense of gravity, with emphasis on light, texture, and emotive color. Working with the simplest of materials, fiber artist Lisa Kokin explores texture using cord and threads. Embedding found and recycled materials into industrial felt, Kokin playfully arranges seemingly disparate materials. Visit www.gailseverngallery.com or call (208) 726-5079 for hours of operation.

SPENCER HANSEN

Selected works on display at Hemmings Gallery (340 Walnut Ave) from July 30 @ 11:00 am – August 24 @ 5:00 pm “The interplay between exploration and heritage lies at the heart of Spencer Hansen’s artistic journey. His childhood in rural Idaho cultivated an intricate relationship with familial tradition, while his nomadic nature exposed him to diverse landscapes. Hansen has been living and working part time in Bali since 2007, where he co-created his main workshop and studio. Within his studio space, Spencer collaborates with Indonesian artisans to experiment with and refine processes, spanning from woodcarving to ceramics, metalworking to design.  His reverence for a handmade approach and his own interest in exploring new processes creates an ever-evolving connection between his team and his creations. His interest in sharing an experience through technical resonance plays a crucial role in his choice of medium, which consists mostly of natural materials. His intentional approach throughout his practice culminates in multimedia sculptures that evoke an otherworldly tenderness within viewers, embodying personas that encompass elements of his playful imagination.”
