ART WORKSHOP: Ceramic Workshop with artist George Rodriguez

Join ceramic artist George Rodriguez in the creation of a Día de los Muertos community altar. In these workshops, we will be making offerings out of clay that symbolize our present community, ancestors and future hopes. George will demonstrate how to make small portraits, alebrijes and flowers with wet clay utilizing several building techniques. You will also have the opportunity to decorate a tile to be added to the exterior of the altar. All ages are welcome at this fun creation event. We will provide materials and tools — join us to add your story to the community altar. This workshop will take place on Thu, Sep 22 from 3–5pm and will be taught in both English and Spanish.

“Wet Felted Landscapes” a Workshop for Teens at SVMoA

Sun Valley Museum of Art is excited to present “Wet Felted Landscapes,” a workshop designed for teens entering grades 6–12. Teaching artist Kerry Brokaw will lead the workshop Wednesday, June 16, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Hailey Classroom. The Museum’s teen workshops are generously sponsored by Joyce B. Friedman. Under the guidance of Kerry Brokaw, middle and high school students will create a personal two-dimensional landscape using wool roving. Kerry will guide students as they work with a wet felting technique using warm water, soap and agitation of colorful wool fibers. Details will be added using felting needles and dry felting technique. Kerry is an artist and Waldorf inspired educator who enjoys sharing her love of arts and crafts with students of all ages. “Kerry is skilled at teaching art to children and regularly hosts classes,” Katelyn Foley, SVMoA’s Director of Education and Humanities explains. “We are excited to welcome her back for an exploration of the fun world of fiber art.” SVMoA is closely following CDC and state and local guidelines regarding health and safety measures. “Ceramic Transformation Vessel” with Bob Dix Presented by SVMoA

Sun Valley Museum of Art (SVMoA) is pleased to present “Ceramic Transformation Vessel” with Bob Dix — a two-session Craft Series Workshop on Thursday, June 3 and 17, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at SVMoA’s Hailey Classroom. The Museum’s 2020–2021 Craft Series Workshops are generously supported by Heather Horton and Deida Runswick. In this class, students will build a clay container by hand. Inside the container they will place a handwritten paper with something they are ready to get rid of, let go of or move on from in their lives. The paper will burn up in the firing process, and students will be left with the vessel they created that represents change. The first night of the workshop, students will focus on slab and coil pot construction; on the second night, students will glaze their pieces. Bob Dix earned a bachelor’s degree at San Francisco State University and an MFA at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Craft Series Workshop: Fluffy to Felted Vessels with Betty Hayzlett

In this class, participants will make a vessel from dyed wool. Beginning with soft fabric, participants will then layer wool over a pattern and add decorative elements. Finally, participants will felt their work using some good old “elbow grease” to shape it into a vessel. Age and ability: 15 and older, beginners welcome! THIS WORKSHOP TAKES PLACE SAT, OCT. 16, FROM 9AM–12:30PM. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Betty Hayzlett has been working with fiber ever since she was a little girl. Today she combines the making of handmade felt (made from raw, dyed wool) with weaving and other materials to make her art. Craft Series Workshop: “Visible Mending: Create Your Own Mending Kit” with Jeanna Wigger

Sun Valley Museum of Art (SVMoA) is pleased to present “Visible Mending: Create Your Own Mending Kit” with Jeanna Wigger—a single-day workshop on Saturday, April 24, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at SVMoA’s Hailey Classroom. The Museum’s 2020–2021 Craft Series Workshops are generously supported by Heather Horton and Deida Runswick. Visible mending is a mindful, sustainable way to extend the life of beloved clothing that involves repairing more and buying less. Workshop participants will learn hand-sewing techniques for mending clothes in a decorative way. These include making visible repairs to denim and knits by using patches, reverse patches and darning, and creating a mending kit from patches that they sew during the class. In addition to providing hands-on instruction, instructor Jeanna Wigger will discuss the history of the human relationship with clothing, the textile industry and ways to reduce waste by limiting one’s reliance on new consumption. Visible mending is one piece of this puzzle. All materials for the workshop are provided, including a workbook with mending instructions and information about the textile industry.
