MUSEUM PASSPORT: Marcel Duchamp with Courtney Gilbert

event-195585-1788368872

Join SVMoA for an in-person conversation with our own Dr. Courtney Gilbert as she explores the landmark exhibition Marcel Duchamp, on view at the Museum of Modern Art through August 23 before traveling to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where it opens October 10. The first major U.S. retrospective devoted to Marcel Duchamp in more than 50 years, the exhibition traces the full arc of one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. Featuring more than 300 works—including paintings, sculptures, films, photographs, printed materials, exhibition designs, and Duchamp’s groundbreaking readymades—it offers an unparalleled look at the artist’s radical reimagining of art.

Gilbert will discuss Duchamp’s enduring legacy through iconic works such as Nude Descending a Staircase (No. 2) (1912), The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even (1915–23), Fountain (1917), Box in a Valise (1935–41), and Étant donnés (1946–66), examining how Duchamp forever changed the way we think about art, authorship, and creativity.

Courtney Gilbert is the Assistant Director & Curator at Sun Valley Museum of Art. Prior to joining SVMoA as Curator in 2006, she worked at the Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas at Austin, and taught Art History at Columbia College Chicago and Texas State University. Courtney holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in art history from the University of Chicago and a B.A. from Dartmouth College. She received a Fulbright Fellowship for dissertation research in Mexico and was a 2025 Center for Curatorial Leadership Fellow.
