Dana Hart-Stone creates digitally rendered paintings using rediscovered vernacular photographs. The exhibit “Americana” is a dialogue between the cinematic strips of Hart-Stone’s square work and kaleidoscopic tondos. Rooted in a deep engagement with the historical and cultural fabric of the American West, Hart-Stone weaves together narratives of the West. His early experiences exploring abandoned homesteads in Eastern Montana fostered a fascination with the fragmented narratives of settler life and the broader, often obscured, histories of the American frontier. These formative encounters continue to inform his work, now expressed through meticulously composed digital paintings constructed from vintage photographs.
By recontextualizing vernacular imagery, Hart-Stone investigates intersecting themes of race, gender, sexual identity, class, and socioeconomic struggle. His work reframes collective memory, offering a nuanced perspective on the individuals and communities that shaped the American landscape. Through this lens, he invites critical reflection on the narratives that dominate national identity, creating space for voices historically marginalized or overlooked.
