Behind the Start Gate: World Cup Preparations with Riley Berman and Stacey Ehleringer

In anticipation of the World Cup ski finals returning to Sun Valley after a nearly 50 year hiatus, the Wood River Museum of History + Culture is offering a series of 3 "Behind the Scenes" talks about what goes into these races from course prep to ski prep to skiers experiences and commentating. The first evening will be on January 7 with Riley Berman, Sun Valley Resort’s competition services manager and chief of race course for the Alpine skiing World Cup Finals at Sun Valley. He'll give a behind the scenes insight on what it's taken to get a World Cup ski course ready for the top 25 skiers in the world. From installing new snowmaking, A-netting (he'll explain all about that), re-contouring and tree removal, many adjustments had to be made in an extremely short 8 month window. Riley is a born and bred local, he grew up ski racing in the Wood River Valley and has worked as a fishing guide and ran Rotarun ski area in Hailey prior to joining Sun Valley. Hooked on Salmon: Protecting the Run

Join us for a panel of local students involved with the Youth Salmon Protectors (YSP), a program of the Idaho Conservation League working to build a coalition of young people across the Northwest dedicated to honoring tribal treaties, breaching the Lower Snake River dams, and saving wild salmon and steelhead. The panel will each share perspectives on Idaho's salmon and take questions from the audience. Speakers will include students from Wood River High School and The Sage School: Leila Brickley, Fisher Hattula, Cora Ward, Sarah Leidecker, and Frances Camilli.

Learn from the Friends of SAC instructor team of snow experts, mountain guides, and experienced avalanche educators. We invite everyone to join if you’re learning about avalanches for the first time or are a seasoned backcountry user ready for a yearly refresher. Event Series Snowshoe with a Ranger

Galena Lodge

Learn about the history of the old Galena mining camp and about the local animals who leave their tracks in the snow during a free Snowshoe with a Ranger tour. The Sawtooth National Recreation Area is offering free snowshoe tours at 11 a.m. Thursdays through March 6th and at 10am March 13 & 20th, leaving from the porch of Galena lodge. The snowshoe trip lasts about two hours, covering 1.5 miles with stops along the way. Tour-goers will learn about the winter ecology and more during the tour. A free one-day Blaine County Recreation district snowshoe pass will be provided. Snowshoes can be rented at Galena Lodge. Snowshoers are advised to dress warmly in layers, wear insulated waterproof boots, gloves, hats,  sunglasses and sunscreen. Dogs and other pets are not allowed on these particular tours. No reservations are necessary. To learn more, call the SNRA at 208-727-5000. An Evening with Christopher Preston

Join us for a conversation with Christopher Preston, a January Writer-in-Residence at The Community Library's Hemingway House. Preston will be in conversation with Martha Williams, the Library's director of programs and education, on his work and writing, which centers on wildlife and rewilding, technology, conservation, and climate change. Their conversation will welcome your questions and range from the implications of the Anthropocene to wildlife recovery and ecological restoration, and from practicing the humanities in scientific environments to examining the ethical dimensions of emerging science and technology. A book signing will follow. Christopher J. Preston is a writer and philosophy professor based in Missoula, Montana. His essays have appeared in The Atlantic, Sierra, Smithsonian Magazine, Discover, Orion, The Conversation, the Wall Street Journal, and The BBC. His latest book, "Tenacious Beasts: Wildlife Recoveries That Change How We Think About Animals" won the 2024 High Plains International Book Award for non-fiction and made the New Yorker’s Best Books list of 2023.
