“Stranger in the Desert” with Jordan Salama
The Community LibraryThe Community Library's Writer-In-Residence at the Hemingway House, Jordan Salama, will discuss his forthcoming book: "Stranger in the Desert: A Family Story," which will be released in February 2024. Inspired by family lore, a young writer embarks on an epic quest through the Argentine Andes in search of a heritage spanning hemispheres and centuries, from the Jewish Levant to turn-of-the-century trade routes in South America. One Thanksgiving afternoon at his grandparents’ house, Jordan Salama discovers a large binder stuffed with yellowing papers and old photographs—a five-hundred-year wandering history of his Arab-Jewish family, from Moorish Spain to Ottoman Syria to Argentina and beyond. Combining travelog, history, memoir, and reportage, Stranger in the Desert transports readers from the lonely plains of Patagonia to the breathtaking altiplano of the high Andes; from the old Jewish quarter of Damascus to today’s vibrant neighborhoods of Buenos Aires. It is also a fervent journey of self-discovery as Salama grapples with his own Jewish, Arab, and Latin American identities, interrogating the stories families tell themselves, and to what end. Pulitzer Prize winner & Tony Award nominee Martyna Majok returns to Ketchum with Off Broadway director Caitlin Sullivan to workshop a brand new play that Martyna has been writing with the support of Sun Valley Playwright's Residency. On September 27 at 5:30 PM, Martyna & Caitlin will participate in a special Q&A at The Argyros Performing Arts Center. Moderated by Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency Artistic Director John Baker, Martyna and Caitlin will speak about their work and collaboration before taking questions from the audience. The Q&A is FREE of charge. Space is limited, and reservations are required. Merlin's Magic LanternFor the 6th year, the Sun Valley Museum of Art presents the MANHATTAN SHORT Film Festival. From September 28 through October 8, this unique festival brings together over 100,000 filmgoers in over 500 cities and towns across 6 continents. The Festival curates a wide variety of films from around the world, and the jury includes ALL film attendees from around the globe, including our Ketchum audience! The Ten MANHATTAN SHORT Finalists hail from eight countries, with films from Australia, Afghanistan, Finland, Iran, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Canada, alongside three films from the USA. The 2023 line-up is linked by a common theme: how we face adversity, whether it is imposed by others or arises from personal circumstances.
