Awaken your creativity. In this 8-day intensive, learn to draw and paint: first in ink, then in watercolor. Capture travel scenes in a pocket sketchbook with Prismacolor and ink, draw and paint from still life setups as well as from projected images. Each 3-hour class will start with a slide show of watercolors by favorite artists and end with a group critique. Treasure the souvenirs! All materials and supplies will be provided. Age & ability: 17+, beginners welcome! THIS 8-SESSION WORKSHOP WILL TAKE PLACE MON–THU, AUG 5–8 AND AUG 12–15, FROM 10AM–1PM DAILY. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Jim Caldwell graduated from Williams College in 1964 as an Art Major and spent the next year in Paris studying printing and etching at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. In 1969, he received his Master of Architecture Degree from the Yale School of Architecture. Jim has had over 45 one-man shows, and his paintings are represented in more than 450 collections worldwide. Though he has spent most of his life in the San Francisco Bay Area, Jim’s Sun Valley connections go back to the 1950s. This will be the fourth class he has taught in Sun Valley.

Make a Starfinder with Astronomer-in-Residence

The Community Library

A star finder is used to identify constellations and other objects in the sky based on date and time. Students will be prepared to discover the night sky after building their own star finder to take home! This activity is led by Boise State Astronomer-in-Residence, Lauren Osburn. This event is for children age 7+. Registration is required. Please register each child who will attend. Registration opens on Monday, July 22nd at 10:00 am. The Search for Extraterrestrial Life: Europa

One of the most asked questions in astronomy is whether we are alone in the universe. Life on earth is abundant with the most obvious example: ourselves. However, we also see life in less obvious places like the Mariana Trench which reaches depths of around 36,000 feet---think the altitude of a commercial airplane but underwater! The life we see at these depths is typically microbial but relies on one major factor: hydrothermal vents. One other place we may see this similar microbial life is on Europa, one of Jupiter’s numerous moons. In October 2024, NASA aims to begin the journey to Europa and determine if extraterrestrial life is closer than we thought. Speaker Lauren Osburn is a recent graduate of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida, where she earned her Bachelor's degree in Astronomy and Astrophysics. During her undergraduate studies, she became interested in the possibility of extraterrestrial life within our solar system, and in the history and evolution of the universe. She also completed a research project in estimating the age of one of the oldest known globular clusters. Join SVMoA for an Artist Talk with visiting artist Maria De Los Angeles, who is leading bilingual teen and community workshops in preparation for her participation in an exhibition at SVMoA next year. Assistant Director in Painting and Printmaking at Yale University, De Los Angeles is a nationally known, Mexican-born, American artist who addresses ideas of migration, belonging, and identity through her drawing, painting, printmaking, and wearable sculptures.
