JASON WHEATLEY: LANGUAGE OF THE BIRDS

In Jason Wheatley’s first solo exhibition at Gilman Contemporary, "Language of the Birds" features surreal and dreamlike still life paintings that explore our relationship with fantastical ideas and recognizable imagery. Embracing the illustrative style of John James Audubon and his famed “Birds of America” series, Wheatley deploys realist and absurdist sensibilities to each still life. Filled with metaphor and riddles, each canvas demonstrates a contemporary sense of humor and folly. Through repetition and practice, Wheatley paints from both memory and life. The oddities that are found in his paintings are a counterbalance the classical renderings in oil.

James Austin Murray: On the Return

"On the Return" features new works from painter James Austin Murray who continues to demand that we put aside preconceived perceptions of light and dark and explore their evolving role in our lives. Murray rakes, scrapes, and physically moves his thickly applied jet-black paint, making the flat surface expand, contract, ripple, and pulse. Each painting is informed by years of innovative, intentional practice that is tempered by the fickle nature of wet oil paint. Murray’s ability to create an infinite possibility with paint and canvas is one that belies the limitation of material. The simplicity creates a visual complexity that can only be experienced when standing in front of one of his paintings. With each painting, we are given a glimpse into Murray’s artistic and material perspective.

Our next Community Roundtable will be Thursday August 1st at the Limelight Hotel in Ketchum. We will be talking about the upcoming FIS Alpine World Cup Finals scheduled for March 18th to 28th, 2025 at the Sun Valley Resort. Panelists will update us on progress in preparing the race course, housing and transporting teams/spectators, the off hill festival and events, and potential brand exposure and sponsorship opportunites. We will also talk about the immediate and longer term postive economic impacts of hosting the Alpine World Cup season finale for the top 25 men and women by discipline in the world. Every Thursday, starting the second week of June we "Scout Wine & Cheese" will be doing a tasting from 5pm-7pm touching upon the qualities and range of wine from the perspective on where and how grapes are grown. Pitting two varietals from 4 separate unique "terroirs" against each other and showing off their differences and similarities, no reservation required.

In cooperation with the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve and the , we are offering several astronomy-related programs this summer. Thursday, August 1, 9:30 p.m. Stargazing with Astronomer in Residence, Lauren Osburn.  Bring your binoculars and meet outside the Library.  See what the night sky has to offer! Later in the month: Wednesday, August 7 at 5:00 p.m.: Lecture: “Revealing the Unseen: Deciphering Telescope Imagery,” with Astronomer in Residence, Lauren Osburn at the Library.  If you have you ever wondered what exactly you are looking at when you see a new Hubble Space Telescope (HST) or James-Webb Space Telescope (JWST) image, join us to learn more! One of the most important factors to consider is the filters being used by the telescope. The most interesting filters are the ones that focus on the light we are unable to see with our eyes. For example, did you know Neptune has rings? Using JWST’s near-infrared camera, we were able to reduce the obscuration from visible light and obtain detailed images of Neptune and its exciting features. Lauren will take a dive into understanding telescopes and the beautiful and inspiring images they provide us with. Ezra Siegel has spent over thirty years exploring forms, shapes and paint surfaces to create something that is both simple and complex. His paintings are both empty and full, ordered yet improvised. With multiple layers of washes and thin paint, Siegel’s work is full of nuanced color and tone. His work suggests a minimalist approach but exhibits a human touch in the hope that the viewer can experience beauty through imperfection and subtlety.
