Behind the Start Gate 2: Steve Porino on working as a commentator for FIS World Cup Ski Racing

The Community Library

Steve Porino, NBC Sports Broadcaster and former alpine ski racer, will talk about what it takes to be a commentator on the world cup ski races - and what gets covered or not, in the US. From his days as a ski racer then moving into commentating on the Outdoor Life Network. Steve has made a career of ski racing, and more recently, being the on motorcycle commentator for the Tour de France. His insights are incomparable into what is happening on the World Cup circuit from who's hot, what new tech gear is needed, and what we might see on TV during the World Cup in Sun Valley. Joining Steve on stage for questions and conversation will be Jake Moe, founder of POWDER magazine.

An intimate journey into the sketchbook world and how drawing can offer a moment of stillness and peace within an often chaotic world. Led by artist Leslie Rego. Thursdays, February 27 - March 27, 2025 (five Thursdays). Registration required. This workshop series offers a welcoming and supportive space for people interested in drawing the natural world. The focus will be on nature journaling. Prompts will be offered as well as guidance. Each session we will jump down a “rabbit hole” and study in depth one plant or landscape element or learn about different brushes, paints, papers, and other art supplies. A list of recommended supplies will be sent to registered participants. Leslie Rego has drawn in journals for years. She carries sketchbooks and paints with her while enjoying the national forest and will take time to draw and paint landscapes and flowers on her many hikes. Leslie wrote the "Sketchbook Hiking" article in The Weekly Sun for many years. She has artwork in private collections, The Sun Valley Lodge and around the world.

Join your local libraries for the closing of the 2025 Winter Read, featuring keynote speaker Jenny Tinghui Zhang, a Chinese-American writer and author of the internationally bestselling novel "Four Treasures of the Sky," which has been translated into 12 languages and short and longlisted for the Chautauqua Prize, the Dublin Literary Award, the Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction, and the VCU Cabell First Novelist Award. Jenny's work has appeared in The Cut, The New York Times, Texas Highways, and The Rumpus, among others. She is a National Book Foundation 5 Under 35 Honoree and has received support from Yaddo, Kundiman, VONA/Voices, Tin House, and the University of Wyoming, where she completed her MFA. The Intermediate/Advanced Fly-Tying series is designed for people looking to refine their skills in tying their flies. In this class, instructor Paddy McIlvoy will teach students more advanced techniques for fly tying and working with a greater range of materials. Each class will focus on a single fly, so sign up for one or all three. Participants should know the basics of fly-tying. Participants will leave with the flies they create. All materials and tools will be provided. Age and ability: 16+ years old and intermediate level Registration is per class, not the entire series. Feb 13: Advanced Fly Tying - Spinning Deer Hair. Learn to spin, stack and trim deer hair. Feb 20: Advanced Fly Tying - Composite Loops – Learn to create multi material dubbing loops Feb 27: Advanced Fly Tying - Game Changer Style Streamers – Learn to tie multi-joint streamers that swim, dart, and wiggle. This is a series of 3 workshops that take place from 6-8pm on Thursdays, Feb 13, Feb 20 and Feb 27 at the Hailey Classroom. Registration is per class

The Wood River Writers’ Groups are led by AJ Super, a local author with a trilogy of science fiction books published by a small traditional press. She is also a Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers’ Association (SFWA) member.

The Sun Valley Music Festival announces its seventh Winter Season, March 6-8, 2025. The 2025 Winter Season features guest curator and pianist Joyce Yang. A Sun Valley favorite, Ms. Yang has performed several times with Music Director Alasdair Neale and the Festival Orchestra, including the Festival’s Summer Seasons in 2013, 2016, and 2021. Ms. Yang rose to fame in 2005 as the youngest contestant and silver medalist at the 12th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. An accomplished chamber musician, she’ll join forces with Festival Orchestra musicians in a program featuring works by Poulenc, Dohnányi, and Schumann. Ms. Yang will also perform solo piano works by Rachmaninoff each evening. The program will be performed each of the three evenings, March 6, 7, and 8, 2025. The concerts will take place at the Argyros Performing Arts Center in Ketchum, starting at 7:00 PM (doors open at 6:30 PM). The concerts are about two hours long, including an intermission.
