SVFF Monthly Movie – RADICAL WOLFE

The Argyros

The Sun Valley Film Festival presents its Monthly Movie selection for September : RADICAL WOLFE. From a beat reporter at the Washington Post to an overnight sensation as the leader of the New Journalism movement, Tom Wolfe was at the forefront of reshaping how American stories are told. Recognizing the importance of overlooked subcultures and communities, Wolfe documented everything from rural stock car drivers to hippies in Haight Ashbury to the Apollo Astronauts, and his ability to bridge cultural and class divides while tackling stories central to American Life was unique in fiction and non-fiction. With a distinctive and oft-imitated style all his own, Wolfe’s body of work includes some of the most memorable and culturally impactful stories of the 20th century like The Right Stuff, The Bonfire of the Vanities, and A Man in Full. Radical Wolfe is a deeply personal and illuminating look at the man inside the famous white suit, featuring conversations and interviews with those who knew him best, including Michael Lewis, Gay Talese, Lynn Nesbit, Terry McDonell, Tom Junod, Christopher Buckley, Niall Ferguson, and Alexandra Wolfe.

“The Salmon Way: An Alaska State of Mind” with Amy Gulick

The Community Library

What is it like to have a relationship with salmon? Intrigued that there is still a place in the world where the lives of people and salmon are linked, photographer and author Amy Gulick traveled throughout Alaska to explore the web of human relationships with these extraordinary fish. Commercial fishermen took her on as crew; Alaska Native families taught her the art of preserving both fish and culture; and sport fishing guides showed her how to cast her line as well as her mind. Amy will share stories and images from her book, The Salmon Way: An Alaska State of Mind, and speak to salmon recovery in the Pacific Northwest based on the relationships and conservation efforts she witnessed in Alaska. Amy Gulick is a photographer and writer, whose work has appeared in Smithsonian, Audubon, National Wildlife, and Outdoor Photographer. She is the recipient of the Voice of the Wild Award from the Alaska Wilderness League, the Conservation Voices Award from Washington Wild, and the Daniel Housberg Wilderness Image Award from the Alaska Conservation Foundation. Her award-winning books include The Salmon Way: An Alaska State of Mind and Salmon in the Trees: Life in Alaska’s Tongass Rain Forest. Registration is ...

Wyatt Earp: A Life on the Frontier

The Argyros

Meet the man, not the myth! The contemporary Wyatt Earp, great grandnephew of the original Wyatt Earp, has been portraying his famous ancestor in this one-man show since 1996. Set in the mid-1920s, an elderly Wyatt Earp tells of his adventures from Arizona to Alaska during the final days of the American frontier. Think 1928…the place is a small apartment in Los Angeles…a tired Wyatt Earp speaks one-on-one with his biographer telling of his time in Tombstone, and his sometimes-turbulent 47-year life with wife Josephine as they traveled throughout the West and Alaska. The play has delighted audiences throughout North America and Europe and was written by the late award-winning playwright Terry Tafoya Earp.

“Stranger in the Desert” with Jordan Salama

The Community Library

The Community Library's Writer-In-Residence at the Hemingway House, Jordan Salama, will discuss his forthcoming book: "Stranger in the Desert: A Family Story," which will be released in February 2024. Inspired by family lore, a young writer embarks on an epic quest through the Argentine Andes in search of a heritage spanning hemispheres and centuries, from the Jewish Levant to turn-of-the-century trade routes in South America. One Thanksgiving afternoon at his grandparents’ house, Jordan Salama discovers a large binder stuffed with yellowing papers and old photographs—a five-hundred-year wandering history of his Arab-Jewish family, from Moorish Spain to Ottoman Syria to Argentina and beyond. Combining travelog, history, memoir, and reportage, Stranger in the Desert transports readers from the lonely plains of Patagonia to the breathtaking altiplano of the high Andes; from the old Jewish quarter of Damascus to today’s vibrant neighborhoods of Buenos Aires. It is also a fervent journey of self-discovery as Salama grapples with his own Jewish, Arab, and Latin American identities, interrogating the stories families tell themselves, and to what end. Jordan Salama is a writer, reporter, and producer. His first book, "Every Day the River Changes," chronicling his journey down Colombia’s Río Magdalena and the lives of the ...
