“In True Face: A Woman’s Life in the CIA, Unmasked”

The Community Library

The bestselling co-author of "The Moscow Rules" and "Argo" tells her riveting, courageous story of being a female spy at the CIA and battling against the prevailing culture of sexism at the time, all while undertaking dangerous missions for America’s safety during the height of the Cold War. Jonna Hiestand Mendez began her CIA career as a "contract wife," a second-class citizen who was hired as a convenience to her husband’s career, a young officer stationed in Europe. Mendez's talent for espionage was clear, and she soon took on bigger and more significant roles at The Agency. She lived under cover and served tours of duty all over the globe, as well as at CIA Headquarters. She confronted dangerous situations that called on her spy training: coming face to face with a rogue Jihadi who had brought down an American plane, and helping steal a top-secret encryption machine from a Soviet embassy, among other high stakes situations. LECTURE: MashUp #2 — Death Masks & Sign Geeks

Sun Valley Museum of Art

The Sun Valley Museum of Art is collaborating with Boise State University’s College of Innovation + Design to bring their MashUp lecture series to the Wood River Valley. Inspired by similar programs at Denver Museum of Contemporary Art and the Palm Springs Art Museum, MashUps are designed to bring audiences together with lecturers to create new connections and linkages between disparate ideas. For each MashUp evening, two presenters will each speak for 20 minutes on a topic of their passion, and a third 20-minute segment invites the audience to ask questions and find commonality between the two disparate topics. The host and timekeeper for the evening will be Boise State University’s College of Innovation + Design’s Associate Dean, Jen Schneider. Tim Andreae is an artist, musician, and mental health professional working in Boise. He'll be talking about an art installation that invited people to create death masks, display them at Ming Studios, and then destroy them as a reflection on impermanence. Jacky O’Connor will be presenting on her work tracking down and capturing photographs of vintage signs, then finding and sharing their stories. $10 member / $12 nonmember
