TEEN WORKSHOP: Indigo Dyed Long-sleeved T-shirts with Amy Johnson

Tie dye a cotton long-sleeved t-shirt using Japanese style Indigo Dyeing. Explore the possibilities of Indigo with submersive dyeing and Shibori, a Japanese resist-dyeing technique that involves twisting cloth and binding it to create a vast array of patterns in the fabric. At the end of the workshop, unfold to reveal the stunning one-of-a-kind patterns. Long-sleeved tee shirts will be provided as part of the workshop, but you are welcome to bring your own items to dye. Dyeable fabrics that work best for this process are wool, silk (100% animal protein fibers) 100% cotton, hemp, or bamboo fibers. Make sure to wear clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting some splashes of blue on! Age & Ability: 12+ and up, all levels, beginners welcome! WORKSHOP: Indigo & Shibori with Amy Johnson

In this hands-on indigo dyeing workshop, explore the possibilities of indigo with a focus on submersive dyeing and Shibori dyeing techniques. Indigo is a natural dye extracted from some plants, and Shibori is a Japanese resist-dyeing technique that involves twisting cloth and binding it to create a vast array of patterns in the fabric. Instructor Amy Johnson will guide you through the best way to prepare fabrics for dyeing, from fabric selection, to washing, scouring and post-dyeing treatment that will give your dyed goods the longest life possible. Then, mix a fructose indigo vat, stitch, wrap your designs, and dip the fabric into the vat of your desired shade of indigo. By the end of the workshop, unfold the pieces and reveal the stunning one-of-a-kind patterns. Make sure to wear clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting some splashes of blue on! Use this opportunity to hone technical drawing skills in a relaxed environment while drawing directly from the human figure. A model will hold a variety of poses throughout the 2-hour session. Join us for Afternoon Art, a free drop-in program where community members of all ages can explore themes from the Museum's current exhibition and create unique works of art. Families and friends are invited to play, create, and collaborate as artists, making this a perfect activity for art lovers, curious minds, and anyone looking for inspiration. Projects will vary, so there’s always something new to discover! Afternoon Art is held in Ketchum on the first Friday of each month and in Hailey on the second Friday from 2:30–4:30 PM. TEEN ART NIGHT: Gesso Transfers

Join us for Teen Art Night, a free art-making program for teens, where we’ll build on the creative techniques from last month’s Alternative Photography Processes to explore the themes of mapping, movement, and identity in connection with the Uncharted: Artists as Wayfinders exhibition. This month, we’ll be continuing our exploration of alternative photography processes, focusing specifically on Gesso transfers. Be prepared to get hands-on with this tactile image-making technique, which allows you to lift and layer photographic imagery in a whole new way. Please send digital photos or other imagery you'd like to include in your transfer to Dianne at dsanchez.shumway@svmoa.org by Thursday, May 8th to make sure they’re printed and ready for you. No experience is necessary, and all materials will be provided. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced artist, this two-hour session is a fun and supportive space for teens ages 12–18 to experiment and express themselves. WORKSHOP: Bookmaking with Drypoint & Chine Colle

Explore intaglio printing, a process where an image is scratched into a plate with a pointed tool. Add to your prints using chine colle (a collage process). Create several prints to then make a handmade hardcover book. Leave the workshop with drypoint plates you can use in future printmaking projects and a one-of-a-kind art book. All supplies for the workshop will be provided, although students are welcome to bring images as sources of inspiration or collage materials want to work with.
