Bailey Studio Series ft. Ken Waldman: Now Entering Alaska Time

Friday evening, April 25, 7 P.M., Ken will perform his ‘Now Entering Alaska Time’solo show that combines fiddle tunes, smart original poetry, and Alaska-set storytelling. Raised outside Philadelphia, Ken moved to Alaska in 1985 to attend graduate school. A former college professor, Ken has lived in Fairbanks, Juneau, Sitka, Nome, Anchorage, and has traveled widely in the state. Now a long-time touring artist, he has appeared at the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, the Dodge Poetry Festival, The Woodford Folk Festival (Queensland, Australia), and leading festivals, concert series, colleges, arts centers, and clubs across North America. If you've been to Alaska, this show will be like taking a return trip from right here in Blaine County. If you've never been, you'll want to go. Saturday, April 26, 10am, Ken Waldman will lead a free two-hour workshop designed for writers of any experience, ability, and age (though recommended for writers at least 13 years old). FOUR WRITING PROMPTS: BEGIN FOUR NEW STORIES OR POEMS The more you write, the luckier you get—and each time you start a piece, there's an opportunity to get luckier than ever. The trick is getting started. Here, you'll not only begin four new pieces, but will learn strategies to begin many more. The session is open to writers of all levels. In addition to being a fiddler (with 12 CDs--and he's performing at The Argyros on Friday night!), Ken Waldman is a former college professor with an MFA in Creative Writing from University of Alaska Fairbanks. He has 16 full-length poetry collections, a memoir (about his life as a touring artist), a children's book, a creative writing manual, and a novel. Over 400 of his stories, poems, and essays have appeared in such journals as Beloit Poetry Journal and Poets & Writers.

This June, join us at the The Argyros to welcome Billy to the Bailey Family Studio for an intimate concert experience. About the Artist Billy Brandt is a singer, guitarist, and composer whose music has working-class appeal that radiates masculine charm and chutzpah. He has a voice like dark roasted coffee with a hint of cream. Raised in Hanover, MA, Brandt now lives in the Pacific Northwest. A mainstay on the Seattle music scene, he performs regularly in clubs all around the city. Brandt is a storyteller, both as a singer and composer, somewhat in the tradition of Tom Waits, though with a more refined and nuanced voice.

The Argyros Performing Arts Center is thrilled to offer a FREE family-friendly screening of Finding Nemo, the beloved animated classic that celebrates the bond between a father and son. Marlin (Albert Brooks), a clown fish, is overly cautious with his son, Nemo (Alexander Gould), who has a foreshortened fin. When Nemo swims too close to the surface to prove himself, he is caught by a diver, and horrified Marlin must set out to find him. A blue reef fish named Dory (Ellen DeGeneres) -- who has a really short memory -- joins Marlin and complicates the encounters with sharks, jellyfish, and a host of ocean dangers. Meanwhile, Nemo plots his escape from a dentist's fish tank. Join us for a fin-tastic afternoon filled with laughter, heartwarming moments, and unforgettable characters.
