Winter Olympics Preview: A Sun Valley Perspective

02475-Gretchen-Fraser

The first winter Olympics happened in 1924 in Chamonix, and while Sun Valley did not yet exist, the paths of the Olympics, athletes and Sun Valley have been intertwined for over the 90 years since the resort was founded. Sun Valley has had ties to alpine skiing, nordic skiing, hockey, ski jumping, figure skating, biathlon, freestyle and snowboard competitions.

Join local experts for previews of what to expect at this year’s Olympics in Milano Cortina in the sports of alpine skiing, figure skating, hockey, Nordic skiing and snowboarding. Who should we be paying attention to, what the venues will be like, and which athletes have Sun Valley ties? Steve Porino, commentator for NBC sports and Peacock, will be covering the women’s alpine competitions and has his finger on the pulse of the current competitors in both men’s and women’s alpine skiing. Former SVSEF coach and Sun Valley Winter Sports Hall of Fame member, Rick Kapala, will update us on the Nordic competitions and especially US phenom Jessie Diggins. Speaking to the experiences of her daughter, hockey phenom Hilary Knight, Cynthia Knight will let us know what to watch for during the US ice hockey games. Ice Operations Director and Ice Show Producer at Sun Valley Resort, Scott Irvine will give his perspective on all things figure skating in this year’s Olympics and a bit of the behind the scenes of who has skated on the outdoor rink at Sun Valley! Andy Gilbert will be our resident expert on all things snowboarding. Having spent 30 years with the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation, Andy’s got a serious insider’s perspective on what is happening with snowboarding.

Registration recommended to join us in person. To watch online (no registration needed) visit: https://vimeo.com/event/5673359. The recording will be available
