LECTURE: Investigative Journalist Leslie Kean on UFOs

Leslie Kean will discuss her twenty-three years of research and mainstream reporting on UFOs, now called UAP (unidentified anomalous phenomena). Her effort has included numerous print stories, press conferences, documentaries, and a best-selling book as she battled a stigma that precluded government acknowledgment of the phenomenon. That all changed in 2017 when she co-authored a front-page New York Times story that was a catalyst for a series of unprecedented developments over the last six years — from the release of Navy videos to a UAP Task Force, new legislation, and three open Congressional hearings. The lecture will be followed by Q & A.

Conversations with the Dean: Wildfires and Open Space Management

Ketchum City Hall

Blaine County, Idaho – Join the Wood River Land Trust, Idaho Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, and University of Idaho for a community conversation with Dennis Becker, Dean of the College of Natural Resources. Dennis will share his expertise on how the Wood River Valley community can mitigate and respond to wildland fires with cross-sector solutions. Scott Boettger, President of the Wood River Land Trust says, “In 2013, when the Beaver Creek fire burned 114,000 acres in our backyard, only one structure was lost. Credit is due to our local firefighters, as well as our local zoning codes— restricting development on hillsides and up remote drainages better prepared us to fight the fire.” In light of Dennis’ research and Blaine County’s wildfire history, Planning Director Cece Osborn at the Wood River Land Trust will discuss the interface between our built environment, community efforts, and surrounding open spaces. Tess O’Sullivan, The Nature Conservancy’s Land Conservation Strategy Lead, will share information about the Conservancy’s statewide approach to building resilient forests that includes the use of prescribed fire. Solutions to wildfires are multi-faceted, reliant on regional coordination, and key to preserving our community’s natural resources. Join us in a community conversation at Ketchum ...

Film: Ariel Phenomenon

Magic Lantern Cinemas

In 1994, over sixty schoolchildren witnessed an unidentified craft land outside their schoolyard. Twenty-five years later, this incident is still fresh in students' memories. They continue to search for answers - and the courage to speak their truth. In this first feature documentary about the Ariel School UFO incident, a young woman returns to her school in rural Zimbabwe - the place that, at the age of nine, shattered her reality. We meet a respected BBC war reporter who reluctantly covered the event, ultimately leading him to risk his career on the one story that haunted him the most. Jeopardizing his reputation is Pulitzer Prize-winning Harvard psychiatrist Dr. John Mack, whose validation of the witnesses made this mass-sighting impossible to ignore. $10 member / $12 nonmember

EVENING EXHIBITION TOUR: Sightings

Sun Valley Museum of Art

Enjoy a tour of the exhibition with The Museum’s curators. Living through the Covid-19 pandemic, Americans developed a new relationship to the night sky, looking to the stars for connection at a time of isolation. Located in rural Idaho, the number one state per capita for UFO sightings, SVMoA sits at the edge of the 1,416 square-mile Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve. Motivated by this geography and by local lore surrounding the possibility of extraterrestrial life, SVMoA’s fall exhibition considers our human experience of UFOs and the extraterrestrial. Rather than ask what those who report UFO sightings have actually seen, the exhibition asks why we look to the night skies for signs of life, and how we experience phenomena we can’t explain. Featuring commissioned projects by artists Deb Sokolow and Cable Griffith alongside work by Karla Knight, Robyn O’Neil, Ionel Talpazan, Esther Pearl Watson, and Timothy Wyllie. Refreshments will be served in the Museum classroom prior to the start of the tour.
