James Austin Murray: On the Return
Gilman Contemporary"On the Return" features new works from painter James Austin Murray who continues to demand that we put aside preconceived perceptions of light and dark and explore their evolving role in our lives. Murray rakes, scrapes, and physically moves his thickly applied jet-black paint, making the flat surface expand, contract, ripple, and pulse. Each painting is informed by years of innovative, intentional practice that is tempered by the fickle nature of wet oil paint. Murray’s ability to create an infinite possibility with paint and canvas is one that belies the limitation of material. The simplicity creates a visual complexity that can only be experienced when standing in front of one of his paintings. With each painting, we are given a glimpse into Murray’s artistic and material perspective.

We will be talking about the upcoming FIS Alpine World Cup Finals scheduled for March 18th to 28th, 2025 at the Sun Valley Resort. Panelists will update us on progress in preparing the race course, housing and transporting teams/spectators, the off hill festival and events, and potential brand exposure and sponsorship opportunites. We will also talk about the immediate and longer term postive economic impacts of hosting the Alpine World Cup season finale for the top 25 men and women by discipline in the world. Scout summer tasting series “Terroir Thursdays”
Scout Wine & CheeseEvery Thursday, starting the second week of June we "Scout Wine & Cheese" will be doing a tasting from 5pm-7pm touching upon the qualities and range of wine from the perspective on where and how grapes are grown. Pitting two varietals from 4 separate unique "terroirs" against each other and showing off their differences and similarities, no reservation required.

Gallery Walk: Language of the Birds, Whimsical Still Life Paintings by Jason Wheatley
Gilman ContemporaryJason Wheatley’s first solo exhibition, "Language of the Birds", features surreal and dreamlike still life paintings that explore our relationship to fantastical ideas and recognizable imagery. Embracing the illustrative style of John James Audubon’s famed avion paintings, Wheatley deploys realist and absurdist sensibilities to each still life. Filled with metaphor and riddles, each canvas demonstrates a contemporary sense of whimsey, wit and folly. "I dabble in the absurd and make it accessible and beautiful at the same time. Hemmings GalleryEzra Siegel has spent over thirty years exploring forms, shapes and paint surfaces to create something that is both simple and complex. His paintings are both empty and full, ordered yet improvised. With multiple layers of washes and thin paint, Siegel’s work is full of nuanced color and tone. His work suggests a minimalist approach but exhibits a human touch in the hope that the viewer can experience beauty through imperfection and subtlety.

Sun Valley Museum of ArtAwaken your creativity. In this 8-day intensive, learn to draw and paint: first in ink, then in watercolor. Capture travel scenes in a pocket sketchbook with Prismacolor and ink, draw and paint from still life setups as well as from projected images. Each 3-hour class will start with a slide show of watercolors by favorite artists and end with a group critique. Treasure the souvenirs! All materials and supplies will be provided. Age & ability: 17+, beginners welcome! THIS 8-SESSION WORKSHOP WILL TAKE PLACE MON–THU, AUG 5–8 AND AUG 12–15, FROM 10AM–1PM DAILY. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Jim Caldwell graduated from Williams College in 1964 as an Art Major and spent the next year in Paris studying printing and etching at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. In 1969, he received his Master of Architecture Degree from the Yale School of Architecture. Jim has had over 45 one-man shows, and his paintings are represented in more than 450 collections worldwide. Though he has spent most of his life in the San Francisco Bay Area, Jim’s Sun Valley connections go back to the 1950s. This will be the fourth class he has taught in Sun Valley.

The Search for Extraterrestrial Life: Europa
The Community LibraryOne of the most asked questions in astronomy is whether we are alone in the universe. Life on earth is abundant with the most obvious example: ourselves. However, we also see life in less obvious places like the Mariana Trench which reaches depths of around 36,000 feet---think the altitude of a commercial airplane but underwater! The life we see at these depths is typically microbial but relies on one major factor: hydrothermal vents. One other place we may see this similar microbial life is on Europa, one of Jupiter’s numerous moons. In October 2024, NASA aims to begin the journey to Europa and determine if extraterrestrial life is closer than we thought. Speaker Lauren Osburn is a recent graduate of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida, where she earned her Bachelor's degree in Astronomy and Astrophysics. During her undergraduate studies, she became interested in the possibility of extraterrestrial life within our solar system, and in the history and evolution of the universe. She also completed a research project in estimating the age of one of the oldest known globular clusters.
