Thai Mainhard: Off the Ground

Gilman Contemporary

In Thai Mainhard’s exhibition "Off the Ground" vibrant, frenetic colors are collaged, painted, and drawn onto canvases that show a sense of composition and experience. Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and based in Los Angeles, California, Mainhard’s personal exploration of place seeps into each of her paintings. In her newest body of work Mainhard embraces tangible objects through an exploration of the composed still life. Expressively rendered maximalist spaces are filled with swatches of bright color, checkered table clothes, and patterned vases of loosely rendered botanicals offer a lingering invitation. These composed paintings are the physical embodiment of the artists internal world and life experience, harnessing the tension between chaos and order, figurative composition, and expressive abstraction.

Lava Ridge Wind Project Panel Discussion

The Community Library

Lava Ridge Wind is a proposed 1 gigawatt windpower project in southern Idaho under development by Magic Valley Energy, LLC (a subsidiary of LS Power). The 400-turbine project would be located across 76,000 acres of public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management and the Idaho Department of Lands in Jerome, Lincoln, and Minidoka Counties. The project has been under development since 2021. The final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is due out in Spring 2024 for public comment, and a record of decision on the project is anticipated in the summer. Since its announcement, the project has faced significant local opposition, including concerns about loss of grazing land, impacts on water availability, and disturbance of the Minidoka National Historic Site, where Japanese Americans were incarcerated during World War II. Proponents of the project, meanwhile, cite the need for such large-scale projects to transition the U.S. away from fossil fuels and to mitigate the effects of climate change. How do we balance the need for renewable energy with local concerns? What happens when diverse communities join together to speak out against large projects? Join us for a panel discussion on the project and these questions. Panelists will include Janet Keegan, ...

Barcelona Flamenco Ballet • CARMEN

The Argyros

Barcelona Flamenco Ballet address the ever-present myth of “Carmen” in their new project. This new recreation of Bizet’s work brings new elements from flamenco that were previously unknown. It goes beyond the traditional conception in which it has historically been categorized and adapts it to the reality of today’s contemporary society. “Carmen” is pain, passion, and a cry for freedom - feelings that flamenco art masterfully represents in its wildest and most primitive aspect. Barcelona Flamenco Ballet tells the story written by Prosper Mérimée delving into the love affair between Carmen, the gypsy, and Escamillo, the bullfighter. Here, too, the flamenco language is the best vehicle of artistic expression to exhibit emotions and is the perfect driving force to convey the passion of the protagonists.
