An Evening of PBS Arts: “SARA” and “Leonardo da Vinci”

The Community Library

Join us for a free evening of PBS arts programming. First, we’ll screen Idaho Public Television’s Emmy award-winning documentary about the late Idaho artist Sara Joyce, "SARA: A Life in Dreams and Symbols." Producer Marcia Franklin and director Andy Lawless will be joined by some of Sara’s family members to answer questions after the film. Then we'll also get a sneak peek of the newest Ken Burns series, "Leonardo da Vinci," premiering Monday, November 18th on PBS. It’s the first film by Burns’ company about a subject outside of the United States, and approaches the work and mind of da Vinci in a novel way. Image: Cloud Gazing by Sara Joyce (1923-2011).

Unearthing Idaho: Mining and Environmental Impacts in the Gem State

Elephant's Perch, Ketchum, ID

Idaho has a long and colorful history of mining, but too many of these mines have polluted streams and contaminated landscapes. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, 40% of watersheds in the West are contaminated by mining activity. The Idaho Conservation League works to ensure that mining activities don’t threaten human health, special places, or Idaho’s clean water. Join Idaho Conservation League’s Central Idaho Director, Josh Johnson, for an inventory of mining in Idaho: past, present, and future. Learn about the environmental impact of mining on air, water, habitat, and public health, as well as what the Idaho Conservation League does to vet these projects and prevent or mitigate environmental consequences.

This award-winning film is an emotional portrait of the mountain warriors' creation, grueling training, daring World War II exploits, then focuses on their next 50 years. Their first battle was the spectacular night climb of Italy's Apennine Riva Ridge where they surprised the Germans on top. That led to a push that ended World War II a week earlier in Italy than the rest of Europe. After the war, they pioneered the United States' infant ski industry and became the backbone of its outdoor education and conservation movements. Veterans of the 10th Mountain Division include many familiar names and faces from Sun Valley in the 1930s as well as after the war: Fire on the Mountain comes full circle as it follows members of the 10th Mountain Division on their 1995 re-climb of Riva Ridge. Again, the Germans were waiting on top, but; this time, veterans from the United States, Austria, Germany and Italy, now members of the International Federation of Mountain ...
