2024 is SBG’s 20th year Wildflower Walks! Join us walking slowly on nearby moderate to easy trails as we appreciate the blooming native plants of our area. Walks will be led by botanists, naturalists, birders, and wildflower enthusiasts. Meet at Sawtooth Botanical Garden (11 Gimlet Road, 4 miles south of Ketchum), and follow each other or carpool to the trailhead. Children under 14 are welcome with an adult. No dogs please! Bring clothing for possible weather, hiking shoes (no flip fops or dress shoes), sun protection, plenty of water, reusable water bottle and a lunch. A camera, field guide, binoculars and notebook may help with identifying and remembering plants. Join The Community Library for a conversation with photographer Nick Brandt and local gallery owner L'Anne Gilman as they discuss Brandt's latest photographic series SINK / RISE. SINK / RISE is the third chapter of "The Day May Break," Brandt’s ongoing global series portraying those impacted by environmental destruction and climate change. This chapter focuses on South Pacific Islanders impacted by rising oceans from climate change. Photographed in-camera underwater in the ocean off the coast of the Fijian islands, the local people in these images are representatives of the many people whose homes, land and livelihoods will be lost in the coming decades as the water rises. "Although they are several meters below the surface, the subjects of Nick Brandt’s mesmerizing photographs do not float or swim. Incredibly, they sit on sofas, stand on chairs, use seesaws, and pose in ways they might on land. The effect is otherworldly, as though the familiar laws of physics have stalled in this strange, liminal zone between land and sea. Sit with these photographs and the others in the series, and the subject’s expressions will change like water. Stoicism becomes resignation. Frustration becomes resolve. Where: Taylor Canyon When: Thursday, July 11th 5:30 PM- 7:30 PM Difficulty: Moderate Project Description: Our Trail Boss led event will be focusing on re-benching a long section of narrow and out sloped trail. What to bring/wear: Closed toe/ankle supporting shoes and pants will be required. We recommend bringing your own eye protection/sunglasses, work gloves and sunscreen. A small pack is nice to have for water, layers and a snack. No dogs please. What we will provide: Tools, required PPE available for use: hard hats, eye protection, gloves etc. Bike helmets are not an appropriate substitute.
