WORKSHOP: Block Printing with Angela Batchelor

Experience the magic of printing from a hand carved block using a printing press! Learn how to create a simple color relief print to make a series of prints. Design your own block using images provided by the instructor or your own photos and drawings. Learn proper print registration, how to use carving tools safely, different ways to print and what types of inks to use. No prior drawing or printing skills are required. Each participant will leave with a small edition of prints that can be framed, made into cards or used as gifts. All printmaking supplies will be provided in this workshop. Age & ability: 16+, all levels, beginners welcome This is a one-day workshop, 10am–3pm, at the Hailey Classroom.

COMMUNITY WORKSHOP: Native Plant Monotypes

SVMoA Hailey Classroom

The stems, leaves, and flowers of plants are essential to their functions: making their own food and providing it to other living things, building healthy soil, cleaning and filtering water, and providing shade. They also create beautiful shapes, lines, and patterns. Participants will apply ink to native plants gathered from the Sawtooth NRA, lay paper over the plants, and use pressure to make beautiful botanical monotype prints. All materials are provided but participants are welcome to bring their own native plants. Age & ability: all ages and levels; beginners welcome! This workshop takes place from 2–4pm at the Museum in Ketchum About the Instructor Rebecca Schultz is the 2024 Sawtooth National Recreation Area Artist-in-Residence. Schultz creates mixed media works–including paintings, prints, installations, and public art–that cultivate a sense of wonder for the complex ecosystems surrounding us and reflect on humanity’s precarious relationship with the more-than-human world.

Join Louise Dixey, Cultural Resources Director at the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes, and Velda Racehorse, Archivist at the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes, for a conversation on Danish American photographer Benedicte Wrensted, who made portraits of many members of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes in her photography studio in Pocatello, Idaho, at the turn of the 20th century. This Lecture is part of SVMoA’s Portraits of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes, Past & Present Exhibition.

Join SVMoA and the Hunger Coalition for a Community Workshop on Portraiture and Self-Representation at our annual Día de los Muertos Celebration! Participants are invited to bring objects and wear clothing that represents who they are and how they want to be seen. A photographer will take portraits of families, friends, and individuals, inviting sitters to express themselves as they participate in the creation of a collective portrait of the Wood River Valley. We’ll have Polaroid cameras on hand for participants to photograph each other with, too. Everyone will receive a copy of their portrait to take with them.

OPEN STUDIO: Printmaking

SVMoA Hailey Classroom

Try your hand at printmaking using a press. Cut a 4x6 linoleum block and do a simple one-color print. Work from images provided in the Open Studio, or bring in your own images to work from. Caty Kendall will be assisting everyone with using the press and learning some of the basics of the printmaking process. All printmaking materials provided at the Open Studio. Ages 16+; all levels, beginners welcome This open studio takes place from 6–8:30pm. About the Instructor Caty Kendall has an MFA from Pratt Institute and has been teaching all ges for more than twenty years. Her work has been presented in multiple galleries on the East Coast and is in the permanent printmaking collections of the New York Public Library and the University of Georgia.

Age & Ability: all ages, families encouraged to attend together Ketchum Afternoon Art runs from 1:30–4:30pm at the Sun Valley Museum of Art. Afternoon Art is offered in Ketchum on the first Friday of each month and in Hailey on the second Friday from 1:30-4:30pm and are recommended for families with children of all ages.
