Introduction to Avalanches Field Day

Join the Friends of the Sawtooth Avalanche Center instructors for a field day covering avalanche rescue basics, snowpack layering, avalanche terrain identification, and basic backcountry travel. Please note- you need to have attended a Friends’ Introduction to Avalanches presentation prior to participating in the field day. There is a $50 suggested donation to the Friends of SAC to cover instructor costs. Donations can be made on www.sawtoothavalanche.com (click the donate button) or via Venmo @sawtooth-avalanche. Thank you! We use a pre-registration system for courses due to high demand. Please sign up for a field day using this Field Day Sign Up Form: HERE We will send out more information about the course in the week leading up to it. We will meet at the SNRA and then spend the day near the SNRA or on Galena Pass. You will need a way to travel over snow (snowshoes, touring skis, splitboard…) Please reach out to Annie at education@sawtoothavalanche.com with any questions.

For children pre-k through 8th grade, St. Thomas Playhouse offers an annual four-day camp between Christmas and New Years! Running from 9am-12pm for half day (pre-k to 1st grade) and 9am-3pm for full day (2nd grade to 8th grade), Winterized is a wonderful opportunity for your young ones! This year, the camp will explore the music of Elton John, with a final performance at 4:30 pm at St. Thomas Episcopal Church. “On This Day”: Ways of Thinking About Daily Writing with Francisco Cantú

A workshop with Francisco Cantú, Writer-In-Residence at the Hemingway House this month. Space is limited. Registration required. This craft class examines the act of writing as a daily practice, the same way many of us engage in meditation, exercise, gardening, or playing music. Since writing often feels like a fraught, mercurial act, we will explore various prompts, practices, and ideas for sitting down to write with levity and ease, while also considering how writing on any given date has the power to connect us to what happened on that day throughout history, and to all the other writers who have sat down to write on the very same day. This class will include a packet of date-specific writing by Ross Gay, Eduardo Galeano, Christa Wolf, Nicholson Baker, and others. Francisco Cantú is a writer, translator, and the author of "The Line Becomes a River: Dispatches From the Border," winner of the 2018 Los Angeles Times Book Prize and a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award in nonfiction. Neighborly Spanish is a free, 8-week class taught on Mondays from noon-1:30 PM by retired local Spanish teacher Jim King. The class will offer basic Spanish language skills seasoned with a little history and culture. Enrollment limited to 20. Classes are on Mondays, starting January 22 through March 18. Fix-It Clinic

Hailey Town Center West

Hailey Public Library is partnering with the Climate Action Coalition and local experts to host a free fix-it clinic on Saturday, January 27, from Noon – 4:00 PM for small, carry-in-sized household items. Half-hour appointments set up on-site will offer guided assistance with volunteer coaches to help disassemble, troubleshoot, and, hopefully, fix personal items. The clinic will be held at Town Center West, 116 S River.
