The Sun Valley Culinary Institute (SVCI) continues to seek candidates for its one-year Professional Program for September 2023 for Wood River Valley and all Idahoans and others who desire or want to consider a career path in the culinary arts. Enrollment is now open, and SVCI would like to meet you. Join Sun Valley Culinary Institute’s Executive Director Karl Uri and staff, including Culinary Director Chef Andrew Floyd, to learn more about SVCI’s one-year Professional Program on Saturday, April 29, from 12 to 3 p.m. and Wednesday, May 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. Uri and Chef Floyd will answer questions concerning the program, coursework, tuition and all it entails to enroll, including professional externships available in Sun Valley, Idaho. Appetizers and refreshments will be offered along with tours to have an on-site SVCI experience. With its new Culinary Director, Chef Andrew Floyd, who arrives at SVCI with more than 22 years of teaching experience, 12 years of restaurant cooking, and 17 years of professional culinary management, SVCI has even more to offer. “Wonder Travels” with Writer-In-Residence Josh Barkan

Join us for a conversation with Josh Barkan, Writer-In-Residence at the Hemingway House, who will share selections from his forthcoming memoir Wonder Travels (Roundabout Press, September 2023). He'll be joined by Martha Williams, the Library's director of programs and education, for a conversation about his new memoir and the craft of writing. A book signing will follow. Josh Barkan won the Lightship International Short Story Prize and was runner-up for the Grace Paley Prize for Short Fiction, the Paterson Fiction Prize, and the Juniper Prize for Fiction. He is the recipient of a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, and his writing has appeared in Esquire. He has taught creative writing at Harvard, NYU, the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa, Hollins University and MIT. His books include the novel Blind Speed and short story collections Before Hiroshima and Mexico (Hogarth/Penguin Random House)—named one of the five best story collections of 2017 by Library Journal. He lives in Boston.

In this 2-day printmaking workshop, participants will spend the first day making printing plates using various substances and surfaces, such as fabric, bubble wrap, wallpaper, leaves, and more. On day two, ink up and begin printing, either by press or hand. Each time your plate is inked will create a unique monoprint, revealing varying tones, textures, and values of color. SVMoA will provide the necessary materials (included in enrollment cost). Age & ability: 16 and older, beginners welcome! THIS 2-DAY WORKSHOP TAKES PLACE SAT, MAY 13 & 20, 10AM–2PM. $200 member / $225 nonmember

“To Taste Life Twice” Seminar

Join The Community Library and Story Forward for three days of writing, reading, and connecting over words. All events are free! Some events require pre-registration. The seminar opens at the Library on Thursday evening, May 18, at 6:00 p.m. with "Reader's Corner," a talk by Bob Kustra, the host of Reader’s Corner on Boise State Public Radio and BSU President Emeritus & Professor of Public Service. Reader’s Corner is a weekly radio show and podcast featuring lively conversations with leading writers, including many winners of top literary prizes and best-selling authors. Kustra will discuss his interviews and their issues and ideas that matter today. All are welcome, through registration is recommended to save your seat. On Friday, attendees can register to attend one of two afternoon breakouts: "Capturing the Unsung Power of Point of View in Fiction, Creative Nonfiction, Poetry" with Christian Winn, or "Untangling the Difficult Narrative: Using Form, Language, and Self-Care to Access Our Wounds" with Rebecca Evans.
