Community Speaker Series: “Solito” with Javier Zamora
The Community LibraryIn 1999, a nine-year-old boy left his tiny village in El Salvador to join his parents who had emigrated to America some years before. His astonishing nine-week, 3,000-mile journey, without friends or family, is the heart of JAVIER ZAMORA’s riveting memoir. Zamora writes in the pitch-perfect voice of that child as he makes his perilous way, on foot and by boat and bus and truck, recalling moments of true terror and of unexpected tenderness. In conversation with executive director of The Community Library JENNY EMERY DAVIDSON, Zamora will speak about the book, about how he was finally able to write it, about trauma and healing and hope, and about becoming the celebrated poet and writer that he is. Presented in partnership with the Sun Valley Writers’ Conference, the Community Speaker Series welcomes speakers from the annual conference to The Community Library for a free community event. This year’s series features Javier Zamora on July 19 and Curtis Sittenfeld on July 25. Registration is required. Events will be livestreamed, and a book signing will follow each event. As the wrongly accused and suffering wife of Shakespeare's tragic Moor, Othello, Desdemona has long been viewed as the "victim of circumstance." But as Paula Vogel demonstrates in her comic deconstruction of Shakespeare's play - aligning tongue-in-cheek humor while raising serious questions as to the role of women through the ages - Desdemona was far from the quivering naif we've all come to know. Thursdays, beginning June 8th, lunch served 11:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Pick up your lunch or stay awhile at the Library's Cimino Plaza, outside the Children’s Library Entrance at 4th and Walnut (the program will move indoors to the Learning Commons during inclement weather). LECTURE: On Collecting – Artists as Collectors and Creators
Sun Valley Museum of ArtSun Valley collector Gary Borman joins Connie Butler, Chief Curator, Hammer Museum at UCLA and recently named Director of MoMA PS1 in New York, for a conversation about the Bormans’ history as collectors—how they started collecting, what it means to collect artists in depth, how they select artwork, and how they live with the art they collect. Butler, who was Chief Curator at the Hammer Museum before her move to MoMA PS1, will speak about collecting from a curatorial perspective.

Sun Valley Story Tour
Jump on the Mountain Rides Blue Route from the Visitor Center in Ketchum for a one-hour free bus tour highlighting the area's rich heritage. Guided by local volunteers. The Mountain Rides Blue Route leaves the Visitor Center at 10:15 am and returns in one hour after traveling to Warm Springs, back to downtown Ketchum, out to Sun Valley and Elkhorn, and back to the Visitor Center. Space on the Mountain Rides bus is limited to 20 Sun Valley Story Tour passengers so we encourage early sign-ups at the Visitor Center Register in advance for this tour by calling 208.726.3423, via email: info@visitsunvalley.com or in person at the Visitor Center at 491 Sun Valley Road, Ketchum.
