Disinformation, Discord, and Story: A Conversation

Join us for an evening of conversation with authors David Quammen and Betsy Gaines Quammen. A book signing will follow. David Quammen is an author and journalist whose books include "The Heartbeat of the Wild," "Breathless," "The Tangled Tree," "Spillover," and "The Song of the Dodo." His writing focuses on science, history of science, and the relationships of humans to landscape and biological diversity. He has also published short nonfiction in magazines such as The New Yorker, National Geographic, Harper’s, Outside, Esquire, The Atlantic, Powder, and Rolling Stone. Quammen has been honored with an Academy Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and is a three-time recipient of the National Magazine Award. His books have received various awards, and Breathless in 2022 was a finalist for the National Book Award. Betsy Gaines Quammen is a historian and writer. She received a PhD from Montana State University where she studied religion, history and the philosophy of science. Her dissertation focused on Mormon history and the roots of armed public land conflicts occurring in the United States. She is fascinated at how religious views shape relationships to landscape. EVENING EXHIBITION TOUR: Bodies of Work: Art & Healing

Enjoy a preview and tour of the exhibition with the Museum’s curator. Bodies of Work features artwork by contemporary artists who have used their practices as ways of navigating and processing their personal experience of medical illness as well as the experiences of others. Working in a range of media and from widely varying points of view, participating artists include Dylan Mortimer, Estelle L. Roberge, Katherine Sherwood, and Renee Stout with new work by Katherine Shaughnessy and Heather Watkins. Refreshments will be served in the Museum classroom prior to the start of the tour.

Art Exhibition: Bodies of Work: Art & Healing

The notion that making and experiencing the arts can be healing has a long history. At the beginning of the 20th century, tuberculosis patients “taking the cure” at sanatoria often participated in structured arts and crafts programs. Wounded soldiers recuperating during World War II were taught “lap crafts,” such as beading and embroidery, as part of their medical therapy. The arts have served as powerful medicine for both mind and body for centuries. When planning for this exhibition considering the connection between art and healing began, the Covid-19 pandemic was dominating headlines around the globe. How do the arts help us process and/or recover from medical illness? How can they help us navigate the complex experience of what it is to be a medical patient facing serious illness in the 21st century? And how can art help us heal from other kinds of social and emotional trauma? Dark Sky Snowshoe

Sawtooth NRA Headquarters

Join Idaho Conservation League, U.S. Forest Service & astronomers from the Idaho Dark Sky Alliance for a dark sky snowshoe at the Sawtooth National Recreation Area Headquarters! We’ll meet for refreshments in the parking lot, go for a gentle .5 mile out-and-back snowshoe (weather dependent) up North Fork road for some naked-eye stargazing, and return to the parking lot for hot chocolate. If you’re interested, please register via Eventbrite or the ICL website! Note on weather: Wish on the stars for snow! If we do not have enough snow for snowshoeing, we’ll take a gentle stroll up North Fork Canyon Road.

An open gathering of acoustic musicians of many levels coming together to play traditional tunes of the Celtic, Canadian, Western and many other genres. This is a free community event hosted by a volunteer. Everyone is encouraged to suggest a tune and to play along as they wish. Listeners are welcome, too! We welcome and seek to include all interested people regardless of age, background, economic resources, or ability. Meeting every other Saturday in the The Community Library Lecture Hall from 3:00-5:00 p.m.

Step Afrika!

The Argyros

Step Afrika! blends percussive dance styles practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities, traditional African dances, and an array of contemporary dance and art forms into a cohesive, compelling artistic experience.  Performances are much more than dance shows; they integrate songs, storytelling, humor, and audience participation. The blend of technique, agility, and pure energy makes each performance unique and leaves the audience with their hearts pounding.
