CELEBRATING OUR 30TH ANNIVERSARY! Thirty years ago, the founders of the Sun Valley Writers’ Conference sat around a kitchen table and dreamt up what would become today’s premier literary conference. Over the last three decades, more than 500 poets, playwrights, historians, novelists, and musicians have graced the stage at SVWC, including novelists Alice McDermott and Hernan Diaz, poets Naomi Shihab Nye and Rita Dove, and longtime friend of the Conference, Frank McCourt. “Thirty years is a long time,” writes SVWC Associate Director Anne Taylor Fleming, “but it feels as if we have kept our soul intact.” Join us to commemorate this momentous occasion Saturday, July 20 through Monday, July 22 at the stunning Sun Valley Resort and Pavilion. The Sun Valley Music Festival proudly announces its landmark 40th-anniversary season, from July 29 to August 22, at the Sun Valley Pavilion. Curated by Music Director Alasdair Neale, the 2024 summer season will feature the all-star Festival Orchestra — which comprises the finest musicians from orchestras throughout North America — performing with a stellar lineup of world-renowned guest artists that includes violinist Leonidas Kavakos, pianists Stephen Hough and Garrick Ohlsson, soprano Meechot Marrero, and cellist Jeffrey Zeigler. To celebrate 40 years of free classical music concerts, the 2024 Summer Season includes two world premieres commissioned by the Festival: a cello concerto by the Pulitzer Prize finalist and multi-Grammy-nominated composer Andy Akiho, performed by former Kronos Quartet cellist Jeffrey Zeigler; and a season-opening fanfare by Timothy Higgins, Principal Trombone of the San Francisco Symphony. Stephanie Childress returns as Associate Conductor to lead several performances, including Mozart’s Symphony No. 36 (Linz), Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries, and Rossini’s William Tell overture. Join us in beautiful Atkinson Park just off Main Street in Ketchum as we welcome 132 professional artists and craftspeople from 27 different states to the Wood River Valley. This Festival is a juried, outdoor, fine arts show that includes world-class artwork in categories such as painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, woodwork, metalwork, jewelry and more. The rigorous jury process used to select artists ensures the residents and visitors to the Festival will see truly exceptional work in all different categories. This Festival also has food trucks, a picnic area, live music, and a kids’ activity area. It is completely free and open to the public. Well-mannered dogs, on a leash, may walk the festival but MAY NOT GO IN ANY ARTIST BOOTH. Any damage to artwork is the financial responsibility of the dog owner. Since 1958, the City of Ketchum has celebrated its mining history with one of the largest non-motorized parades in the west. Come spend the weekend with the whole family and watch the Big Hitch Parade on Saturday at 1 p.m, featuring quality buggies, carriages, carts and stagecoaches, is one of the largest non-motorized parades in the Pacific Northwest. Don't forget you can get an up-close view of the gigantic Lewis Ore Wagons on display through our the month of August at the Ore Wagon Museum. 2024 Schedule TBD. Save the Dates! The 28th annual Trailing of the Sheep Festival will be held October, 2-6, 2024! Sheep have been trailing through the Wood River Valley of Idaho for well over a century and are an integral part of Idaho’s heritage. Each fall the iconic Trailing of the Sheep Festival honors the 150+ year annual tradition of moving sheep (‘trailing’) from high mountain summer pastures down through the Valley to traditional winter grazing and lambing areas in the south. This annual migration is living history and the focus of a unique and authentic Festival that celebrates the sheep, herders, history, food, arts, cultures, and traditions of Idaho’s sheep ranching families, highlighting the principal contributors – the Basques, Scottish and Peruvians.
