Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway held an abiding affection for central Idaho from his first visit to Sun Valley in 1939 until his death in his final home along the Big Wood River in the Sun Valley, Idaho area in 1961. Things To Do: Pay your respects at the Hemingway Memorial (1.5 miles east of the Sun Valley Lodge), at the Ketchum Cemetery (1026 N Main Street) or by visiting his favorite haunts (click here for a map). Broschofsky Galleries

Established in 1987, Broschofsky Galleries features 19th-21st Century Fine American Art. A collection of museum quality American Indian antiquities compliment the historic through contemporary paintings and sculptures of western and Native American imagery, landscapes, wildlife and abstract works. A prominent selection of photographs from the Edward Curtis project, “The North American Indian” (1898-1928), portray works from the 30 year project in which Curtis fashioned a magnificent, luminous portrait of American Indian life – documentation of over 125 tribes west of the Mississippi River. Broschofsky Galleries also displays screenprints from Andy Warhol’s 1986 suite, “Cowboys & Indians,” which includes 10 different classic images derived from western and Native American art. A unique and changing collection of the gallery’s acquisition of historic works by early American artists is also available.

Mountain Images Gallery

Mountain Images Gallery features landscape images of Idaho and beyond, as well as limited edition fine art photographs. Photographer James Bourret travels into the wilderness areas of the West and strives to capture the transcendent experiences that only wilderness can offer us. “I seek to create richly evocative, emotional images from nature, reflecting the mood, form, colors and patterns of a scene. Whether it is a small detail, an abstraction, or a grand lanscape, my hope is to convey emotional impact, wonder, and a sense of movement and change.” Prints (framed and unframed) and canvas prints are available in a variety of sizes. Workshops and instruction in landscape photography, computer editing techniques, and creativity are offered.

Wood River Museum of History and Culture

All the exhibits at the Wood River Museum include interactive elements, where visitors are encouraged to write, type, talk, and remember – because we all are part of history! For example, in the Hemingway exhibit, individuals can sit at a typewriter like the one that Hemingway used and try typing their own true sentences.
