Fire on the Mountain celebrates the United States' indomitable snowmen, the men of the 10th Mountain Division, America's only mountain and winter warfare troops. This award-winning film is an emotional portrait of the mountain warriors' creation, grueling training, daring World War II exploits, then focuses on their next 50 years. United by their love of the mountains, the 10th attracted championship skiers & mountaineers. Their first battle was the spectacular night climb of Italy's Apennine Riva Ridge where they surprised the Germans on top. That led to a push that ended World War II a week earlier in Italy than the rest of Europe. After the war, they pioneered the United States' infant ski industry and became the backbone of its outdoor education and conservation movements. Veterans of the 10th Mountain Division include many familiar names and faces from Sun Valley in the 1930s as well as after the war: Fire on the Mountain comes full circle as it follows members of the 10th Mountain Division on their 1995 re-climb of Riva Ridge. Behind the Start Gate: World Cup Preparations with Riley Berman and Stacey Ehleringer

In anticipation of the World Cup ski finals returning to Sun Valley after a nearly 50 year hiatus, the Wood River Museum of History + Culture is offering a series of 3 "Behind the Scenes" talks about what goes into these races from course prep to ski prep to skiers experiences and commentating. The first evening will be on January 7 with Riley Berman, Sun Valley Resort’s competition services manager and chief of race course for the Alpine skiing World Cup Finals at Sun Valley. He'll give a behind the scenes insight on what it's taken to get a World Cup ski course ready for the top 25 skiers in the world. From installing new snowmaking, A-netting (he'll explain all about that), re-contouring and tree removal, many adjustments had to be made in an extremely short 8 month window. Riley is a born and bred local, he grew up ski racing in the Wood River Valley and has worked as a fishing guide and ran Rotarun ski area in Hailey prior to joining Sun Valley. Skis, Shovels, and Stories: History of the Sun Valley Ski Patrol in the 1960s with Dave Laster

Hot off the presses, Dave Laster has just published a book on the history of Sun Valley's Ski Patrol during the 1960s and will talk about his experiences here in Sun Valley teaching and patrolling. Laster was raised in Seattle and educated as a historian and geographer in Bellingham, before joining the Sun Valley ski patrol in the early 1960s. In addition to his time on the ski patrol, he also taught with Sigi’s ski school, worked the trail crew, was a bellhop at the Sun Valley lodge, and ran the Opera House. He was an active mountaineer, drawn by both the Cascades and the Sawtooths. He and his wife Claudia later taught high school for the military dependent schools in Germany and Italy, before retiring back to Bellingham. He returns to Sun Valley each year with the Seattle-based Ancient Skiers group. This program will be livestreamed and available to watch later. Behind the Start Gate 2: Steve Porino on working as a commentator for FIS World Cup Ski Racing

Steve Porino, NBC Sports Broadcaster and former alpine ski racer, will talk about what it takes to be a commentator on the world cup ski races - and what gets covered or not, in the US. From his days as a ski racer then moving into commentating on the Outdoor Life Network. Steve has made a career of ski racing, and more recently, being the on motorcycle commentator for the Tour de France. His insights are incomparable into what is happening on the World Cup circuit from who's hot, what new tech gear is needed, and what we might see on TV during the World Cup in Sun Valley. Joining Steve on stage for questions and conversation will be Jake Moe, founder of POWDER magazine.

Curtis Bacca will be in conversation with a local former U.S. Ski Team racer on the World Cup circuit, Jonna Mendes.
