Benefit Screening of Oscar-Winner “The Whale”

Catch a very special screening of A24's Academy Award-Winning film "The Whale" on August 29, 2023 at 5:30 PM at The Argyros Performing Arts Center in Ketchum, ID to benefit Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency. The evening includes a pre-screening reception and a post-screening conversation with playwright, screenwriter, MacArthur “Genius” Fellow, and Idaho-native Samuel D. Hunter. The Q&A will be moderated by Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency Artistic Director John Baker. Hunter and Baker worked closely together on Hunter’s acclaimed play "The Whale," which Hunter later adapted for the screen. Following its premiere at the 2022 Venice Film Festival, the Darren Aronofsky film was nominated for three Academy Awards and won two. Brendan Fraser won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of a reclusive English teacher who attempts to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter. Q&A with Pulitzer winner Martyna Majok & director Caitlin Sullivan

Pulitzer Prize winner & Tony Award nominee Martyna Majok returns to Ketchum with Off Broadway director Caitlin Sullivan to workshop a brand new play that Martyna has been writing with the support of Sun Valley Playwright's Residency. On September 27 at 5:30 PM, Martyna & Caitlin will participate in a special Q&A at The Argyros Performing Arts Center. Moderated by Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency Artistic Director John Baker, Martyna and Caitlin will speak about their work and collaboration before taking questions from the audience. The Q&A is FREE of charge. Space is limited, and reservations are required. Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency is a non-profit organization that gives playwrights time and resources to write in an inspired Idaho setting and provides the local community events that offer insight into writers’ creative processes. We foster new relationships between theatremakers and Idaho’s Wood River Valley community and fuel the American theatre with invigorating new plays that speak to our collective humanity. Annually, we work with one playwright to foster a new play from idea to full draft, and we produce events centered on this playwright, their existing plays, and the new play they are writing. The playwright begins the residency with a month-long stay at the historic Ernest and Mary Hemingway House, which is owned and operated by The Community Library. Join Sun Valley Playwright's Residency for a FREE reading of Rajiv Joseph's play "Gruesome Playground Injuries" on Saturday, October 14 at 7:00 PM at The Argyros in Ketchum. A Pulitzer Prize finalist and two-time Obie Award winner, Rajiv Joseph is the 2023-2024 Resident Playwright of Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency. The reading is also directed by Rajiv Joseph, and it features David Janeski and Aly Wepplo. In "Gruesome Playground Injuries," the lives of Kayleen and Doug intersect at the most bizarre intervals over the course of 30 years, leading the two childhood friends to compare scars and the physical calamities that keep drawing them together. Sun Valley Playwright's Residency in partnership with The Argyros & The Community Library presents THE TREASURER A Play Reading Written & Directed by Max Posner Featuring David Janeski, Billie McBride, Shonda Royall, and Jeremy Shamos MacArthur “Genius” and Idaho native Samuel D. Hunter (The Whale; A Case for the Existence of God) leads a conversation with Sun Valley Playwright's Residency's 2024-2025 Resident Playwright Max Posner followed by a reading of Posner’s hit Off Broadway play, The Treasurer, featuring Wood River Valley-based David Janeski (Gruesome Playground Injuries), Colorado Theatre Guild’s Lifetime Achievement Award Winner Billie McBride (Torch Song Trilogy), Shonda Royall (Clyde’s at Boise Contemporary Theater), and Obie Award Winner and Tony Award nominee Jeremy Shamos (Here We Are; Clybourne Park). Ida Armstrong is broke, lonely, and fading fast. And she’s spending all of her children’s money, forcing her son to assume the unwanted role of The Treasurer: an arrangement that becomes untenable the more he questions his devotion to her. This darkly funny, sharply intimate portrait chronicles the strained ties between a son and his aging mother, and the hell of a guilty conscience.

Sun Valley Playwright's Residency in partnership with The Argyros, Boise Contemporary Theater, Boise State University's Dept. of Theatre, Film, and Creative Writing, and The Community Library presents A FREE Reading of a New Play-in-Process HOROSCOPE Written & Directed by Pulitzer Finalist and two-time Obie Award Winner Rajiv Joseph Featuring Theatre Arts Majors from BSU Friday, October 25, 2024 at 7 PM The Argyros Tickets: FREE, reservations at www.sunvalleyplaywrights.org The evening begins with a conversation with Pulitzer Prize Finalist and two-time Obie Award winner Rajiv Joseph about his creative process, followed by a reading of his new play, HOROSCOPE, commissioned by Sun Valley Playwright's Residency. Twelve characters, twelve scenes, twelve months of the year: HOROSCOPE centers on a group of twenty-somethings searching for meaning beyond their current orbit. The reading features Theatre Arts majors from Boise State University.
