Benefit Screening of Oscar-Winner “The Whale”

Catch a very special screening of A24's Academy Award-Winning film "The Whale" on August 29, 2023 at 5:30 PM at The Argyros Performing Arts Center in Ketchum, ID to benefit Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency. The evening includes a pre-screening reception and a post-screening conversation with playwright, screenwriter, MacArthur “Genius” Fellow, and Idaho-native Samuel D. Hunter. The Q&A will be moderated by Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency Artistic Director John Baker. Hunter and Baker worked closely together on Hunter’s acclaimed play "The Whale," which Hunter later adapted for the screen. Following its premiere at the 2022 Venice Film Festival, the Darren Aronofsky film was nominated for three Academy Awards and won two. Brendan Fraser won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of a reclusive English teacher who attempts to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter. Pulitzer Prize winner & Tony Award nominee Martyna Majok returns to Ketchum with Off Broadway director Caitlin Sullivan to workshop a brand new play that Martyna has been writing with the support of Sun Valley Playwright's Residency. On September 27 at 5:30 PM, Martyna & Caitlin will participate in a special Q&A at The Argyros Performing Arts Center. Moderated by Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency Artistic Director John Baker, Martyna and Caitlin will speak about their work and collaboration before taking questions from the audience. A Pulitzer Prize finalist and two-time Obie Award winner, Rajiv Joseph is the 2023-2024 Resident Playwright of Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency. Hunter (The Whale; A Case for the Existence of God) leads a conversation with Sun Valley Playwright's Residency's 2024-2025 Resident Playwright Max Posner followed by a reading of Posner’s hit Off Broadway play, The Treasurer, featuring Wood River Valley-based David Janeski (Gruesome Playground Injuries), Colorado Theatre Guild’s Lifetime Achievement Award Winner Billie McBride (Torch Song Trilogy), Shonda Royall (Clyde’s at Boise Contemporary Theater), and Obie Award Winner and Tony Award nominee Jeremy Shamos (Here We Are; Clybourne Park). Ida Armstrong is broke, lonely, and fading fast. And she’s spending all of her children’s money, forcing her son to assume the unwanted role of The Treasurer: an arrangement that becomes untenable the more he questions his devotion to her.
