Sun Valley Opera and Broadway presents the Metropolitan Opera’s Live Simulcast of Verdi’s “AIDA” Saturday, January 25 at Merlin’s Magic Lantern.

World Premiere: Khedivial Opera House, Cairo, 1871. This grandest of grand operas features an epic backdrop for what is in essence an intimate love story. Set in ancient Egypt and packed with magnificent choruses, complex ensembles, and elaborate ballets, Aida never loses sight of its three protagonists. Few operas have matched Aida in its exploration of the conflict of private emotion and public duty, and perhaps no other has remained to the present day so unanimously appreciated by audiences and critics alike. Soprano Angel Blue makes her long-awaited Met role debut as the Ethiopian princess torn between love and country, one of opera’s defining roles. Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin takes the podium for Michael Mayer’s spectacular new staging, which brings audiences inside the towering pyramids and gilded tombs of ancient Egypt with intricate projections and dazzling animations. Mezzo-soprano Judit Kutasi, following her 2024 debut in Verdi’s La Forza del Destino, is Aida’s Egyptian rival Amneris, and tenor Piotr Beczała is the soldier Radamès—completing opera’s greatest love triangle. Costa Rican-American Soprano Teresa Castillo has been hailed by the San Francisco Gate as a “standout, bringing power and florid elegance,” and by Opera News for exhibiting “a clean, concentrated sound, and a lovely, intelligent musicianship.” Ms. Castillo's training includes participation in San Francisco Opera's prestigious Merola program and as a Resident Principal Artist with Teatro Nuovo and a member of the Virginia Opera Herndon Emerging Artists program. The 60-minute concert of pop music, musical theater, American songbook and opera follows a brief reception with a charcuterie table and wine bar. Victor Ryan Robertson’s musical journey has been unique. The young tenor from Atlanta originally went to college on a tennis scholarship, but subsequently turned in his locker key to pursue a busy livelihood as a rock singer. Fate brought him together with Mary Ann Hill, professor of voice at Georgia State University, who led Robertson to realize that his vocal gift might take him much further than he imagined Victor Ryan Robertson is an American musical artist distinguished by the compass and color of his tenor voice; he navigates genres comprising classical, contemporary, pop and Broadway to deliver inspiring and thrilling performances on both opera and theatrical stages. Fidelio’s unusual structure, glorious score, and life-affirming aura make it a unique experience. It has been called a hymn to freedom and human dignity. Formally a singspiel (with musical numbers separated by spoken dialogue), Fidelio had a long and complex gestation. Its uplifting spirit made it the obvious choice for several important productions marking the end of World War II, including the reopening of the Vienna State Opera in 1955. The opera is set in Seville toward the end of the 18th century, during the time of political upheaval following the French Revolution. The Met’s production places the action in an unspecified contemporary setting.

Mozart’s timeless masterpiece Le Nozze di Figaro is packed with hilarious hijinks, glorious melodies, and sharp social commentary. Dynamic young conductor Joana Mallwitz leads an energetic staging by Richard Eyre that The New Yorker hails as “accessible and entertaining, but smart and cunning, too - delightful.” Bass-baritone Michael Sumuel and soprano Olga Kulchynska are the newlyweds Figaro and Susanna, alongside baritone Joshua Hopkins and soprano Federica Lombardi as the Count and Countess Almaviva. Mezzo-soprano Sun-Ly Pierce completes the principal cast as the incorrigible page Cherubino.

Claus Guth, one of Europe’s leading opera directors, gives the biblical story—already filtered through the beautiful and strange imagination of Oscar Wilde’s play—a psychologically perceptive, Victorian-era setting rich in symbolism and subtle shades of darkness and light. Headlining the new staging is soprano Elza van den Heever as the abused and unhinged heroine, who demands the head of Jochanaan, sung by celebrated baritone Peter Mattei. Tenor Gerhard Siegel is Salome’s lecherous stepfather, King Herod, with mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung as his wife, Herodias, and tenor Piotr Buszewski as Narraboth. The story of this incendiary and powerful opera is derived from a brief biblical account: A young princess of Judea dances for her stepfather Herod and chooses as her reward the head of the prophet John the Baptist. Rossini’s effervescent comedy retakes the stage in Bartlett Sher’s madcap production. Mezzo-soprano Aigul Akhmetshina headlines a winning ensemble as the feisty heroine, Rosina, alongside high-flying tenor Jack Swanson, in his Met debut, as her secret beloved, Count Almaviva. Baritone Andrey Zhilikhovsky stars as Figaro, the titular barber of Seville, with bass-baritone Peter Kálmán as Dr. Bartolo and bass Alexander Vinogradov as Don Basilio rounding out the principal cast. Giacomo Sagripanti conducts. Rossini’s perfectly honed treasure survived a famously disastrous opening night (caused by factions and local politics more than any reaction to the work itself) to become what may be the world’s most popular comic opera. Its buoyant good humor and elegant melodies have delighted the diverse tastes of every generation for two centuries, and several of the opera’s most recognizable tunes have entered the world’s musical unconscious, most notably the introductory patter song of the swaggering Figaro, the titular barber of Seville.
