Cheatgrass: The Worst Weed in the West

event-195367-1787083025

Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) poses a serious threat to ecological function across the semi-arid West because it displaces native species, alters historic fire regimes, and provides poor forage for much of the year. It now covers tens of thousands of acres in and around the Wood River Valley. Cheatgrass grows early and then dries out, creating continuous fine fuels that increase wildfire frequency and severity. It also outcompetes native grasses, shrubs, and flora that support mule deer, pronghorn, sage-grouse, songbirds, pollinators, and other wildlife. Additionally, cheatgrass has barbed seeds that can injure pets and livestock.

Come learn more about the worst weed in the West and what local land managers are doing to combat it at this panel discussion hosted by the Idaho Conservation League and the National Forest Foundation. Panelists will include:

Bobbi Filbert – Ketchum District Ranger, Sawtooth National Forest

Miranda Reinson – Magic Valley Habitat Biologist, Idaho Fish and Game

Jake Renz – North Zone Fire Management Officer, Sawtooth National Forest

Dr. Allani Fostvedt – Veterinarian, Mountain Humane
