A Talk With National Geographic Photographer Sofia Jaramillo
Aspen One, a leading voice in sustainability and community engagement, is thrilled to announce its inaugural Aspen U event at Limelight Ketchum, a free program for employees and the community, combining education with beer and thought-provoking conversations facilitated by leaders on climate and justice. This special event, featuring National Geographic photographer Sofia Jaramillo and her groundbreaking project “A New Winter,” will take place on Thursday, September 19th at 6:00 PM at Limelight Ketchum. The evening will explore the evolution of ski culture and its future through the lens of photography, with a captivating discussion that delves into the history of skiing in the United States. The conversation will explore how the sport transitioned from a mode of transportation to a commercialized leisure activity, with a particular focus on some of the earliest marketing images of skiing that originated in Sun Valley.
Inspired by her personal journey growing up as a Latina in Sun Valley, Idaho, Jaramillo’s “A New Winter” project offers a powerful new perspective on the sport. Through a series of striking images, the project challenges the traditional, often Eurocentric portrayal of skiing in the United States, simultaneously honoring ski history while challenging the stereotypes perpetuated by its initial depictions. The Aspen U will feature a panel discussion with Jaramillo and other leading voices in the ski industry, examining the impact of historical narratives and exploring ways to create a more accessible and welcoming future for everyone.
The event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 5 PM for drinks and mingling. Conversation begins at 6 PM.
