Event Series Preservation Hall Jazz Band

Preservation Hall Jazz Band

The Argyros

Preservation Hall Jazz Band’s mission is to preserve the extraordinary music that evolved in New Orleans around the turn of the century and to bring that music to contemporary audiences. Individually, these musicians represent the industry’s elite, and collectively, they keep alive the traditions of this uniquely American sound. Known for their high energy, crowd-pleasing performances, Preservation Hall Jazz Band has been described by music critics as “the best jazz band in the land.” The Argyros is thrilled to partner with our friends from “Pres Hall” for a unique three night musical journey, the likes of which you’d be hard pressed to find in New Orleans, New York, or anywhere else. The band will play three entirely different shows, and each night the Tierney Theater will be transformed to match the feel of that show’s musical mood. Night one will be a traditional seated concert, featuring many of the beloved Big Easy jazz standards that have made Preservation Hall and the “N’awlins Sound” famous around the world. On night two, the Tierney Theater will be converted into a cabaret-style jazz nightclub, and the song selection will match that more intimate setting. Finally, night three will be a red-hot jazz dance ...

Film screening: FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN: The Story of the 10th Mountain Division

The Community Library

Fire on the Mountain celebrates the United States' indomitable snowmen, the men of the 10th Mountain Division, America's only mountain and winter warfare troops. This award-winning film is an emotional portrait of the mountain warriors' creation, grueling training, daring World War II exploits, then focuses on their next 50 years. United by their love of the mountains, the 10th attracted championship skiers & mountaineers. Their first battle was the spectacular night climb of Italy's Apennine Riva Ridge where they surprised the Germans on top. That led to a push that ended World War II a week earlier in Italy than the rest of Europe. After the war, they pioneered the United States' infant ski industry and became the backbone of its outdoor education and conservation movements. Veterans of the 10th Mountain Division include many familiar names and faces from Sun Valley in the 1930s as well as after the war: Fire on the Mountain comes full circle as it follows members of the 10th Mountain Division on their 1995 re-climb of Riva Ridge. Again, the Germans were waiting on top, but; this time, veterans from the United States, Austria, Germany and Italy, now members of the International Federation of Mountain ...

Skis, Shovels, and Stories: History of the Sun Valley Ski Patrol in the 1960s with Dave Laster

The Community Library

Hot off the presses, Dave Laster has just published a book on the history of Sun Valley's Ski Patrol during the 1960s and will talk about his experiences here in Sun Valley teaching and patrolling. Laster was raised in Seattle and educated as a historian and geographer in Bellingham, before joining the Sun Valley ski patrol in the early 1960s. In addition to his time on the ski patrol, he also taught with Sigi’s ski school, worked the trail crew, was a bellhop at the Sun Valley lodge, and ran the Opera House. He was an active mountaineer, drawn by both the Cascades and the Sawtooths. He and his wife Claudia later taught high school for the military dependent schools in Germany and Italy, before retiring back to Bellingham. He returns to Sun Valley each year with the Seattle-based Ancient Skiers group. This program will be livestreamed and available to watch later. Go to event link watch online live or after the event, the recording will be posted on the Event Archive button on The Community Library's website.
