“Learn to Knit” a free, 4-part class taught by master knitter and Sun Valley Needle Arts owner Patricia Lirk is back! The series will focus on the basics and conclude with a personal project. Classes will be held at the Hailey Public Library located at 7 West Croy on Tuesdays from 5:30-7:00 PM, starting February 6. Participants provide their own yarn and needles. Join us for a complimentary Bald Mountain Tour, offered every Monday, Wednesday & Friday throughout the winter season. Tours meet at 9:30am in the Mountain View Room at River Run Lodge and are guided by one of the friendly members of our Mountain Guest Services team (yellow coats). They will guide you around Bald Mountain’s vast terrain, share where the best skiing and riding is and wow you with some amazing historical facts about Sun Valley. Tours are open for all ski levels.

The Community Library Book Club: “The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store”

The Community Library Book Club is hosted the first Wednesday of every other month and led by a diverse range of library staff. Books cover all genres from new fiction to classics to nonfiction, young adult, graphic novels, and everything in between. Register at www.comlib.org to join the club. The group meets in the Programs Studio, downstairs from the Children's Library. February's pick is "The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store" by James McBride. The discussion will be led by circulation manager Pam Parker. In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. "The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store" is available at The Community Library in multiple formats. Please come in or talk to our librarians about reserving a copy.

Join is for our Ski with a Ranger tours on Bald Mountain every Tuesday and Thursday this winter season. A Forest Service ranger meets interested guests at the Bald Mountain Map near Sun Valley’s Lookout Restaurant. The tour lasts a pleasant hour while skiing the mountain making three stops for the ranger to give his talk. Topics covered include a wealth of interesting information about local history, geography, geology, the Bald Mountain Stewardship program, expansion plans and local public lands.

Galena Lodge

Learn about the history of the old Galena mining camp and about the local animals who leave their tracks in the snow during a free Snowshoe with a Ranger tour. The Sawtooth National Recreation Area is offering free snowshoe tours at 11 a.m. Thursdays through March 21 leaving from the porch of Galena lodge. The snowshoe trip lasts about two hours, covering 1.5 miles with stops along the way. Tour-goers will learn about the winter ecology and more during the tour A free one-day Blaine County Recreation district snowshoe pass will be provided. Snowshoes can be rented at Galena Lodge. Snowshoers are advised to dress warmly in layers, wear insulated waterproof boots, gloves, hats,  sunglasses and sunscreen. Dogs and other pets are not allowed on these particular tours. No reservations are necessary. To learn more, call the SNRA at 208-727-5000. Juhlin has spent decades studying western landscapes, specifically the Great Basin and the high arid desert of the Kaiparowits Plateau in Southern Utah. His mixed media works consist of layers of paper, ink, paint and wax. "Although I don’t consider myself a landscape painter, I seek to reflect a sense of stillness, vast space and the visual history of time evident in the western landscape. My paintings allude to the raw typography and the amazing colors and light from where I live. In this environment, time often reveals itself in the form of rock strata that is both built up and worn away by the elements in a continuous process. Similarly in my work, I reveal layers of translucent strata composed of pigmented & cold wax, oil paint, paper and other media that are built up and worn away in the storied layers of the creative process."
