Bald Mountain

Join is for our Ski with a Ranger tours on Bald Mountain every Tuesday and Thursday this winter season. A Forest Service ranger meets interested guests at the Bald Mountain Map near Sun Valley’s Lookout Restaurant. The tour lasts a pleasant hour while skiing the mountain making three stops for the ranger to give his talk. Topics covered include a wealth of interesting information about local history, geography, geology, the Bald Mountain Stewardship program, expansion plans and local public lands.

Galena Lodge

Learn about the history of the old Galena mining camp and about the local animals who leave their tracks in the snow during a free Snowshoe with a Ranger tour. The Sawtooth National Recreation Area is offering free snowshoe tours at 11 a.m. Thursdays through March 21 leaving from the porch of Galena lodge. The snowshoe trip lasts about two hours, covering 1.5 miles with stops along the way. Tour-goers will learn about the winter ecology and more during the tour A free one-day Blaine County Recreation district snowshoe pass will be provided. Snowshoes can be rented at Galena Lodge. Snowshoers are advised to dress warmly in layers, wear insulated waterproof boots, gloves, hats,  sunglasses and sunscreen. Dogs and other pets are not allowed on these particular tours. No reservations are necessary. To learn more, call the SNRA at 208-727-5000. “Gatsby: An American Myth” A Virtual Conversation with Martyna Majok

As part of the 2024 Winter Read of "The Great Gatsby," Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Martyna Majok joins us from her home in New York to discuss the book in relation to her upcoming Broadway musical, "Gatsby: An American Myth," debuting in Spring 2024 at the American Repertory Theater at Harvard University in Boston. Majok wrote the libretto for the new musical based on "The Great Gatsby," in collaboration with international rock star Florence Welch (Florence + The Machine) and Oscar and Grammy Award nominee Thomas Bartlett. We'll discuss the joys and challenges of adaptation and why Fitzgerald's novel continues to dazzle and entertain a hundred years after its creation. Majok will join us over Zoom, but all are welcome to join us in the Library's John A. and Carole O. Moran Lecture Hall. This program will be available to watch live online, but a recording with not be available. Register to save your in-person seat. LECTURE: MashUp #1 — Digital Arborglyphs & Sound and Mind

The Sun Valley Museum of Art is collaborating with Boise State University’s College of Innovation + Design to bring their MashUp lecture series to the Wood River Valley. Inspired by similar programs at Denver Museum of Contemporary Art and the Palm Springs Art Museum, MashUps are designed to bring audiences together with lecturers to create new connections and linkages between disparate ideas. For each MashUp evening, two presenters will each speak for 20 minutes on a topic of their passion, and a third 20-minute segment invites the audience to ask questions and find commonality between the two disparate topics. The host and timekeeper for the evening will be Boise State University’s College of Innovation + Design’s Associate Dean, Jen Schneider. John Bieter is a Boise State University professor and historian of Basque culture, and a veteran presenter from Season 1 of MashUp held in Boise. He will be presenting on a project capturing images of wayfinding and cultural carvings Basque sheepherders have made in aspen trees for decades.
