“When Books Went to War” with Molly Guptill Manning

As part of the 2024 Winter Read of "The Great Gatsby," join us for an evening with Molly Guptill Manning, author of "When Books Went to War: The Stories That Helped Us Win World War II." When America entered World War II in 1941, we faced an enemy that had banned and burned 100 million books. Outraged librarians launched a campaign to send free books to American troops, gathering 20 million hardcover donations. Two years later, the War Department and the publishing industry stepped in with an extraordinary program: 120 million specially printed paperbacks designed for troops to carry in their pockets and rucksacks in every theater of war. These small, lightweight Armed Services Editions were beloved by the troops and are still fondly remembered today. Soldiers read them while waiting to land at Normandy, in hellish trenches in the midst of battles in the Pacific, in field hospitals, and on long bombing flights. This pioneering project not only listed soldiers’ spirits, but also helped rescue "The Great Gatsby" from obscurity and made Betty Smith, author of "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn," into a national icon. Join us for a complimentary Bald Mountain Tour, offered every Monday, Wednesday & Friday throughout the winter season. Tours meet at 9:30am in the Mountain View Room at River Run Lodge and are guided by one of the friendly members of our Mountain Guest Services team (yellow coats). They will guide you around Bald Mountain’s vast terrain, share where the best skiing and riding is and wow you with some amazing historical facts about Sun Valley. Tours are open for all ski levels.

Skiing and S’mores at Quigley Trails Park

BCRD Quigley Nordic Trails

Blaine County Recreation District is hosting a free evening of Nordic skiing and s’mores at Quigley Trails Park in Hailey on Friday, February 23 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.  This family-friendly event will feature a campfire with free hot chocolate, s’mores, and beer. The community is invited to bring their Nordic skis and enjoy a moonlit glide on Quigley Trails Park’s groomed ski trails.  During this event, a Nordic pass is not required to ski. Participants are encouraged to bring a headlamp or flashlight if the night is cloudy, as the trails are not lit. To foster a welcoming environment for all, we recommend that dogs are left safely at home during this community event.

On December 14, join us for a Free Ski Day, courtesy of the Blaine County Recreation District. This is your chance to experience the joy of Nordic skiing on our beautifully groomed trails at no cost. In addition, Elephant's Perch and Backwoods are hosting an Equipment Demo Day at Galena Lodge. Whether you're a seasoned skier or new to the sport, this is a perfect opportunity to try out the latest skiing gear. With expert advice available, you can find the equipment that best suits your style and needs. In addition, Galena Lodge will be offering free 30 minute beginner ski lessons at 10:00 am, 11:00 am, 12:00 pm, and 1:00 pm. No registration required.
