TEEN WORKSHOP: Botanical Cyanotypes WITH ASHLEY LARSON

Delve into the alternative photography process of cyanotypes and learn about their historical role in botanical illustrations. Select from an array of natural materials to compose your own work of art. Expose the cyanotypes to the sun and bring them indoors to witness the transformation as your compositions come to life. Each participant will leave with knowledge of the technical aspects of cyanotype creation and their own unique and captivating piece of botanical art. Students are encouraged to bring their own natural objects for making cyanotypes. This workshop will work mostly with pre-coated cyanotype paper. Age & Ability: 12–18; all levels; beginners welcome! THIS WORKSHOP TAKES PLACE FROM 10AM–NOON AT SVMOA'S HAILEY CLASSROOM. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Ashley Larson is an interdisciplinary artist based in Boise, Idaho. She has a love for photography, drawing, painting, and sculpture. Currently, she creates works focused on domestic spaces and personal memory.

Watch as sun exposure transforms the compositions and brings the cyanotypes life. Each participant will leave with knowledge of the technical aspects of cyanotype creation and their own unique and captivating piece of botanical art. Students are encouraged to bring their own natural objects for making cyanotypes. This workshop will include paper coating during the workshop rather than using pre-coated paper. Join Wood River Trails Coalition for a morning work event on the iconic Curly's Trail! Where: Curly’s When: Tuesday, August 20th 9 AM- 11:30 AM Difficulty: Moderate Project Description: Come out and join us for a morning event at Curly’s. We will be cleaning out some drainage features that need some work on the bottom section. This is a great opportunity to learn about how water effects our trails and how we mitigate that. What to bring/wear: Closed toe/ankle supporting shoes and pants will be required. We recommend bringing your own eye protection/sunglasses, work gloves and sunscreen. A small pack is nice to have for water, layers and a snack. No dogs please. What we will provide: Tools, required PPE available for use: hard hats, eye protection, gloves etc. Bike helmets are not an appropriate substitute. Growing up white in Washington state, Barbara Hilyer’s dad never told her anything about his family—except that his mother was “crazy.” Ten years after his death, she learned his sister was living in Hawai’i. Discovering “the family secret” introduced her to the concept of passing, and the complex nature of race and identity. Uncommon in the white world, passing is a familiar concept among African Americans. Meeting her aunt, an African American woman deeply involved in state politics, took Barbara’s life in a new direction, which led her to Hilo, Minneapolis, Washington, DC, and the Deep South—researching the extended family she could never know, and the historic times that defined them. This story challenges America’s oversimplified view of race and explores how different individuals across generations pursued all available avenues of opportunity to define their lives in a race-conscious society. American history is not white history, although it has been presented that way. The times call for a truth telling. S. Barbara Hilyer spent her public school teaching career in Ashland, Oregon, where she taught elementary school as well as middle and high school social studies, including American History.
